Blatman Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 In my honest (but not legally tested) opinion, you'd be *VERY* unlucky to end up in front of the beak for wearing an "illegal" lid in a car, BUT it only needs one copper who isn't sure for him to give you a summons to test that theory. As always, there is a risk of prosecution, even if it's a slim one... But you may be on a "sticky wicket" in any dispute over the causes of an accident, "But he did'nt see because of that helmet m'lord" The lawyers would jump on that one! impaired vision etc, etc. If you had an accident, then yes it would be a good argument to use, but it would still have to be proved that the lack of visibiliy was the root cause, and not some other outside influence. You still run the risk of simply being stopped and questioned, should a copper decide he *want's* a magistrate to test the law. Remember , the Police can't be aware of all the laws of the land, all the time. Getting a summons to a magistrates court for something like that (a grey area of law) is simply a part of the process of testing the law. Usually Joe Public loses, usually because he is unprepared for the legal argument if he chooses to defend himself. BUT when there are grey areas, IMHO the merits of the case should be debated and tested in a court so that the Government and legal profession can continue to make proper changes to the law for the right reasons. MVS Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Can't speak from personal experience on a Simpson, but if a helmet is noisy chances are it isn't a very good fit. If it isn't a very good fit it will cause a headache neck ache, and generally be a pain, as JeffC says, and because of this can be very distracting. Having spent many years riding bikes in all weathers, and having tried many many lids, my head is Arai shaped. Arai's are more expensive, but quiet (I have never needed earplugs, even for 100mph plus on the continent), comfy for me and many colleagues, light, and also can be custom fitted easily @ many big bike dealers (interior padding). As far as finish goes they are top drawer, so you get what you pay for IMHO. There is a very good range of visors, spare parts and Arai employ techs to custom fit their lids as mentioned, who failry regularly visit dealers. What is your head worth?? Quote
Willow Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 If your thinking of buying one check out if its legal for the road. It may not apply now but I bought a Simpson Bandit back in the late 80's and it wasn't legal for the road as the visor hole was too small. Simpson have been producing a road legal version of the Bandit for a couple of years now: clicky here Doesn't look as good as the non-road legal version though. Quote
JeffC Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 my helmet fits ok, vision isnt a problem as my eyes will only go so far and i can see out of the visor both ways worse thing about mine is the wind that comes through the gap round the visor , it gives you very sore eyes after a while, I never had this problem with my bike helmet even with a cheapy tinted visor on it. bike helmets like arai are streets ahead on quality Quote
Jack T Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Yeah know what you mean Jeff mine dries my eyes out and is really irritating but having never owned another helmet i thought it was the norm. But cant get my money back now so balls to it, Still look cool Jack Quote
Blatman Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 You can seal the visor with a little thought/lateral thinking Quote
Jack T Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Yeah was thinking about putting some sort of really thin foam around the apature (spelling) to seal it but i am a bit loathed to mess around with a £400 helmet. Any other Ideas, and siliconing it shut aint an option Jack Quote
JeffC Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Foam/sponge seal type stuff is the way to go at the bl**** price you shouldnt have to though, bet you have never had to with a bike helmet.. jack... is the finish around the vents on yours all grotty or did i get a Friday afternoon helmet Quote
Jack T Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 I know what you mean Jeff about not having to mess around for the money but i ve got it now so will have to make the best of it. In fairness the finish on mine it very good even around the vents and i am pretty picky. I was just glad to see mine cos it turned up the day before Harewood and it had been on order for 4 weeks.
