Where, when and what at Le Mans?

Me and my drinking partners will be lurching off on Thursday week to France... so outside of the race itself what are the must (and must not?) do's and don'ts?

I hear that going into Le Mans on the Friday night is de rigour...

Don't get completely & utterly trashed on the Friday night so that you almost don't make it to the start the following afternoon (much to the amusement of your mates!  ).

Make sure you drag yourself out of bed at 03 : 00 and get yourself into the grandstand area (The Tribunes).    Then from there, make sure you make it down to Anarge for dawn.  :t-up:

Finally, if you want to see the finish, make sure you're somewhere BEFORE the start/finish straight. If you want to see the winners doing a victory lap, you'll be disapointed as they turn around and go in the pit lane the wrong way instead.

PS... Make sure you have a tiny FM radio so you can listen to Radio Le-Mans.

I'm there again this year. How about an official meet for a beer on Saturday evening, somewhere within the new village?

On Friday, apart from driving the track, make sure you get time to visit La Chartre to the south of Mulsanne, about 1/2 hour drive from the circuit. There's a hotel in La Chartre village centre (you need to hunt for the centre because its not obvious). Inside & around the bar hanging on the walls are signed photo's of all the old drivers who used to stay there. Bit of a museum of history rather than a hotel really. Buy a drink at the bar & chill out in the village square outside where you'll usually see a driver or two & some interesting cars. There are also some nice village restaurants around & about this village where the food is excellent & cheap, much better than the overpriced stuff at the circuit.

If its any interest

Ive just returned from the french moto gp at le mans and agreat weekend it was too

On the way there we sailed to Caen and spent until early afternoon touring the normandy landing beaches and the museums at Arromanche (the mulberry harbour site )

It is very spine tingling and VERY worth the effort

There are some nice blatting roads off the beaten track but beware of the route priorities in yhe little villages

have a good time

To watch the loons, go to the roundabout near hoex annex. Stand back though as speeds round it tend to get faster as the night goes on!

Hey Felters...

There's plenty of Le Mans stuff on here. Check the Events section... :p

First place to look outside this site is Club Arnage.

As has been said already though, tuning your radio to Radio Le Mans is *essential*.

Felters, When on Thursday are you guys going down, and which route?

10.40 on Speedferries to Boulogne - I think? I didn't book the crossings... and we're camping in Houx Annexe courtesy of Team Langoustine so it shouldn't be too difficult to watch the nutters on the roundabout  :D

Houx annexe huh? Good luck getting any sleep during the race :D

I'm in Houx this year  :(

Not expecting much sleep - not so much the cars I'm worried about as the amount of beer and other 'spectators' in the vicinity !! :D

We are in Hoex Annexe, I find that due to my drinking skills I can get a good eight hours sleep there, though it is spread over 5 days..........................

On Friday, apart from driving the track...

We get to drive the track? Do you have any details?

Posted

Oh I suspect we will wonder down on Sunday evening for a bit of roundsabout spectating, not like we would of seen any motorsport for nearly 5 or 6 hours by then. :D

We were a bit late, so camping way out of it in Beausejour this year.

You get to drive the bit that's public road...

You can drive the length of the Mulsanne straight sans chicanes, the right at Mulsanne Corner, then the run down through Indianapolis and Arnage to the Porsche Curves, which is where the track proper takes over again. It'll be waaaaay too busy during the day, and there are roving speed traps there *all* the time...
