Boomy Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 Unlucky mate, i have also been there. I worked in estate agents (booo) for around 5 years after leaving school.Ended up hating the people in that enviroment though despite loving the job. Then i went to work for for a large newspaper wholesaler, ended up a manager after 5/6 years.Moved on from that to work for News International printing the Sun/Times etc, great prospects, good money, busted my nut and was made redundant from that "job for life" along with many others That was no bad thing though as it turned out as things are altering a great deal there too, so there are going to be loads more people made redundant shortly. I went back to the wholesalers but things were changing there and they got rid of almost everyone to replace them with contractors, mostly from Russia etc. Decided to go for a total change and did a tower crane course after that, passed the 2 week course but realised i hated the job after a week!. So, i now currently bang about in a lorry full of beds. The pay isn't that great, but we have a laugh and it is only 10 minutes from where i live so it will do for now. So, like you i have no real idea what i want to do.I honestly just gave up on careers i think as i have seen so many people lose jobs that were supposedly secure.I just can't be arsed to make the effort to progress in anything anymore, prefering to just trickle along with a bit of spare change in my pocket. Another friend of mine for example has just been made redundant even though for years he has been an absolute gem of an employee. He single handedly ran the place, coping with all the problems, giving up his own free time to help out and fix things that would of normaly cost the company money to have fixed etc.Heck, he even used to work on the bosses cars and houses in his own time just because he was a damn fine guy and very clever with DIY etc. They needed to get rid of one person however after losing a certain contract (well, they probably didn't need to) and because he left around 5 years ago to follow his DIY passions (it didn't work out) they realised they could save some cash in redundancy by getting rid of him. So, you are far from alone mate.My woman has had the same thing happen too.She used to work in a solicitors and worked closely with the likes of Frank Warren etc (so was always being invited to boxing matches etc and meeting them all) and loved it. Then one day...p**f...it all shut up shop and her dream job for life went down the pan. However she has been happy now in her new company for years and there are various other "best thing that has ever happened to me!" tales i could tell, so it may all work out for the best. Quote

Gromit Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 Sorry to hear the news Jon, same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago. I`ve deciced on a complete career change, been in the same line of work for 22 years now and have come to the realisation that working for someone else sucks big time. Going to give self employment a stab, thats why i`ve knocked doing the ally welding on the head so I can concentrate my efforts towards getting that up and running. I was half expecting something to happen towards the end of this month but it still comes as a shock when your told that your surplus to requirements ( the old tale of "we`ve lost a big contract" ). Dont dispair, take a bit of time and you`ll come across something that you can do, and in the meantime try and relax. Quote

gadrego Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Sorry to hear this. Been there myself and facing the real prospect of it happening again. All I can say is that from my own and other people's experiences these things always seem to work out for the better. Keep your chin up and best of luck. Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Sorry to hear your news, Fish. I've had this experience back in the late 80s and it's not nice. Just a thought, there are security equipment distributors out there - Gardiner, Elvey, etc., and many of their customers are people in the electrical installation trade who do alarms on the side - people you will already know. I don't know what the state of the business is at the moment as I am less associated with it than I was, but it's an idea worth considering. Of course dependent on who you used to be with you might already know this. FWIW my strategy was to gang up with a couple of colleagues and start our own business in manufacturing security equipment. That is now not as quite as straightforward as it was, though. Quote
Camel_Landy Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 If it's any help, have a quick look at Jobserve.com. I use it & if nothing else it'll give you some useful agencies to talk to. Good luck. Mark. Quote
