neilb Posted May 20, 2002 Posted May 20, 2002 Sorry that your car was nicked and glad to hear that it's been recovered. Just a couple of words of warning before you go to pick it up. Make sure that the little t**ts have not spiked the seats with needles and if the engine is not rev limited that there is no damage to the engine. I used to work in the body shop trade and cars that were recovered with no outer signs of damage often had been knackered internally. Hope that all is well with yours. Neil Quote
Robertio Posted May 20, 2002 Posted May 20, 2002 I'll just echo the other comments, glad it is back and hopefully it is in good nick. Quote

Peter Cox Posted May 21, 2002 Posted May 21, 2002 Sounds like it's been 'hotwired'... Anyone got any tips (or even surefired ways) to prevent "Hotwiring" for our cars? Quote
rkenyon Posted May 21, 2002 Posted May 21, 2002 Not really as the wiring is so exposed. Best bet would be to put more switches in the system at different (physically) places. i.e. a battery cut-out switch hidden somewhere, an immobiliser, more cut-out switches etc.... Quote
SEiGHT Posted May 21, 2002 Posted May 21, 2002 I've got an immobiliser on mine, but I also have a removable steering wheel. I'd like to see the f**kers try and get away in a straight line (although if they had a trailer I'd still be stuffed ) How about a switch under the bonnet that cuts off the fuel pump ? If you have a lockable bonnet they'd have to drill out the locks to get to it, and then they wouldn't be able to drive off without the bonnet flying off. Or maybe even removing the rotor arm from the distributor...just don't lose it ! Taking things to extremes, how about a couple of blocks of C4 under the seats linked up to a disarm switch a-la Mad Max ? Quote
smayo Posted May 21, 2002 Posted May 21, 2002 I've got a tip that might help prevent hotwiring. I made up 2 aluminium plates which blank off the underside of the dash, with a cut out for the lock on the drivers side (and for the heater vents). They are rolled so that they come down to meet the scuttle return edge, and then covered in vinyl to match the dash. I did this to help with the SVA, as if the tester can't get there, he can't test it, but it also stops anyone getting to the wiring. It's a slight pain when you legitimately want to get to the wiring as you have to remove the dash, but let’s face it, that’s not really very difficult on a Westfield. Five minutes and it’s off, five minutes and it’s back on again. Also had a Toad virtual key immobiliser fitted, £130 and I am very impressed with it. No plug in key, only a sensor loop around the steering lock, and 2 circuit immobilisation. I am also going to get a removable steering wheel fitted. I'd like to see them try to get around all that! (well actually I wouldn't but they could try) smayo Quote
andypevy Posted May 21, 2002 Posted May 21, 2002 When I replaced my original engine with a Zetec I 'kind of' bodged the ECU to the top of the pedal box with very wide velcro. Now if I have to leave the car anywhere dodgy I simply remove the ECU and take it with me javascript:emoticon(%27;)%27) AndyP Quote
neo Posted May 21, 2002 Posted May 21, 2002 Glad you got it back and hope its not too damaged, the trouble is even if they get who done there's no deterant these days with all the do gooders and that,it makes you wonder what the #### the countrys coming too..... :0 Quote
garyo Posted May 21, 2002 Author Posted May 21, 2002 thanks for all the kind words. I'll be going to see the car in the compound tomorrow, until then I don't really know how bad it is. Hopefully there'll be some battery left so I can check out the engine etc. Gary. Quote
