Al Yupright Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Ah, usual hypocrisy where it is ok to tell someone else off for talking off-topic, but its fine for yourself to do it. Go and read the register or something!! Quote

adamnreeves Posted April 3, 2006 Author Posted April 3, 2006 you into hosting aren't you. I have been playing with Xen which is kind of like VMWare, i.e. virtual hosts, but it is supposed to be better for performance. It's good makes setting up virtual hosts easy once you have one going. But you probably use apache and use virtual hosts under there. I think setting up virtual hosts under Xen is more secure. No question. However, Xen (or similar) is a lot more complex to set up etc., and often isn't worth the effort for simple shared hosting environments. Having said that, I haven't really looked into Xen, but I did have a play with UML a year or two ago. Oh, and Al, beggar off Andy Yep, see what you mean. Had a play for UML for a short while and it was a pig to get going, in fact I gave up before I got it working. The XEN stuff pretty much worked within 1hr of downloading it. The really cool feature is that you can transfer the running host over to another machine whilst it is up and running and apparently only takes 100ms but this needs a NAS. Suddenly 99.999% availability is starting to sounds realistic. Anyway I better shut up before Yup Alright tells me off! Quote
Blatman Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 As for shopping on line or over the phone with a debit card, it's just lunacy. Credit card or don't bother... Quote
MAT1800 Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Went into the store to buy some stuff, surprise, surprise they didn't have half of it in stock so agreed that they would send the remaining items on by post, one of the things I bought was a new airfilter for one of my throttle bodies. Two days after I thought, I'd like to change the other filter so they match etc so rang them up to ask if they could stick one in the same box as the other bits they were sending out to me, the answer was no they couldn't do that as their system wouldn't let them! Thats bizzare, Although I ordered over the Internet both times, I've been able to email them the next day to change the order. In fact Today I emailed them to add a small item I had forgotten, hardly the sale of the year, they replied within about 2-3 hrs to say it was fine, I should have the order by Wednesday. Perhaps it's just you Mark... Quote
reaper Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 i was worried a bit about shoppin online and then i discovered pre pay credit cards. no chance of anyone buying things on it if i havent put any credit on it. I only do that when i know i need to buy something so no worries Quote
peterg Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 As for shopping on line or over the phone with a debit card, it's just lunacy. Credit card or don't bother... Lunacy or not, I put down deposits on two flats via a debit card over the phone last week - they wanted to add 2% if I used a credit card Quote
Blatman Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 2% of a large sum is a significant cost. But credit cards offer so much more protection to the consumer over debit cards that IMO it is usually worth coughing up any extra fees... Besides which, I thought moves were afoot to stop companies charging credit card fees over and above the ticket price. I'll have to check... Quote
peterg Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Don't think it's a problem in my case as there's all the usual contracts in place about deposits/exchange/completion anyway and no they're not one each for me and the missus...one's in Dewsbury and the other's in Leicester... on the other hand... MAT1800 Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 I seem to remember reading or hearing that credit card companies have started to charge retailers more to pay for Chip and Pin..... But I could have just dreamnt that. Quote
chazpowerslide Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 DT have always been very good with me, if you have a haggle they'll normally drop the price a bit and the stuff always turns up when they say it will. They do seem to have an issue with the stock holdings on certain items but that's the same where ever you go. Chaz. Quote
adhawkins Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Ah, usual hypocrisy where it is ok to tell someone else off for talking off-topic, but its fine for yourself to do it. Hypocrisy? Not really. As Adam has said, this is 'Website / Message Board Chat'. Pretty much anything goes here really. And I was joking when I told you where to go (hence the smiley). Andy Quote
pgh Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 I seem to remember reading or hearing that credit card companies have started to charge retailers more to pay for Chip and Pin..... But I could have just dreamnt that. If a retailer chooses not to use Chip & PIN then they will be liable for any fraud on the non chip transaction. Otherwise, charges remain the same (ignoring the cost of all the C&P equipment minus the associated reduction in fraud chargebacks) Ubuntu/Kubuntu for me, although my main daily os is OS X Quote
Mark B Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 Perhaps it's just you Mark... I've often thought that Matt...Is it me? Whenever I go there they never have everything in stock, waited 3 months last year for a steering wheel.... Quote
steve_m Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 Ubuntu/Kubuntu for me, although my main daily os is OS X I'd see a Doctor with that, there are creams for all sorts of things these days, and no need to be embarassed Quote
