steve_m Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 There's some pretty big 4 pot diesel engines, you can run 3 or 4 bar boost on diesels quite easily, would make for an interesting gearbox I think Iveco have a 4 litre unit. Or how about a turbo Duratec, I read on the darkside that IIRC Ammo has a 2.5 conversion . . . all alloy so low weight, would be good enough to make interesting power and be reliable. Why stick with 4 pot ? Quote
felters Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 I've come accross the 3 Litre 16v 4 cylinder Porsche engine as found in the 1988 944 S2 and the 1993 968 CS. All alloy and I can imagine it will be well designed too. Wasn't there a 944 Turbo anyway? Quote
markcoopers Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 I think 3L is about as big as it gets, bejond this the flame front across the piston is too slow to make them of any kind of use to modern cars. Even porsche strggled with this for a while I remember reading in a book recently. Quote
philsugrue Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 this may help a little Nice link, Cheers Quote
hilux Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Think thats as big a 4 cylinder car engine you're going to find. Never thought of it before but I bet it would make a fine engine for a Westy..... if it fits. It would indeed, over 330 bhp easily with an uprated wastegate and remapped chip............. Problem is its canted over and although compact is low (hence the 944 styling but is wider) Some colleagues with 3 litre blocks and longer strokes via 2.7 crank are running 420 bhp (which is nice) and they handle the power and handle superbly also. Note all 944 951 968 derivatives are ostensibly the same engine ie: half a 928 I can get you dims if you like but the engine and boost management are a complicated nightmare. So if you are researching its best to go down the route of an independent ECU and loom. I`d recommend the non turbo derivative as the boost is sensational (300+ bhp equates to sub 5 secs to 60 in the 951`s) but would deffo light the wheels up in a Westy My 951 engine bay Personally 200 bhp available `relatively` cheaply from a VX XE is the way to go. I`ve had huge grunt/torque in kit cars and you do not need much more than 200bhp in a Westy. To go a different route is achallenge but expensive, rewarding but for what reason? What will the car do differently except sound different. What about RX8? Quote

Yobbo Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Are 2.5 litre Ford Duratecs with us yet ? Bound to be a good choice in years to come, just for tuneability and availability and they do fit. Quote
scruffythefirst Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 What about a vr6, v6 or straight 6? Quote
RS WST Posted March 21, 2006 Author Posted March 21, 2006 How would the 3 litre engine react to turboing? Would it rev well enough. Would the engine be upto the power? Only thinking of using the head and block, the inlet, exhaust and loom would be e-bay'd What other exotic 4 cylinders could be an alternative? Quote
markcoopers Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Anything with a pole and woman conected to it....hang on.... EXOTIC sorry.... Quote
hilux Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 How would the 3 litre engine react to turboing? There are some 3 litre 968`s that are supercharged Quote
gadrego Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Just another thought, how about the 2.5 from a late E30 M3? Know nothing about them but worth a look. Quote
dern Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Judging from the price of spares even on my lowly 2.5 944 I'd say that it could be potentially a very expensive way to go should you decide to tune it whereas a lower capacity ford unit may well have more options but would inevitably be more common. Lovely engine mind. Quote
S8ight Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 What other exotic 4 cylinders could be an alternative? not quite 4 pot, but have you thought about the ovlov T5R motor ?? full ally engine, ladder mains, massive ammounts of reliable power available and you can pick them up cheap !! Quote
