Pit Bull
Hi, I have my eye on a Cosworth powered Westfield (normally asperated) with LSD. The car in question looks very well built and appears spot on. What I would like to know is what are the pitfalls for this motor and what sort of power should this kind of unit produce. What if anything I should look for when viewing the car and during the initial drive? Any advice welcome. Many thanks.
Blatman
Welcome Atmo's huh? My specialist subject... Is it on carbs or fuel injection? What gearbox and clutch does it have? I assume it's in a wide chassis, but you never know. It'd be handy to know what size the silencer is if track days are on the cards, as well as knowing who actually made the manifold and silencer system. It'd also be handy to know who built the engine and/or where the parts came from. Do make sure it's an actual Cosworth 200 or 205 block, and not a Pinto block with a Cossie head. That will have implications for the power output and what you can rev it to. As for what to look for, ignore the reg number. Condition is *everything*. If it's in good nick and the owner has a decent file of bills/receipts and record of work carried out, you won't go far wrong. Do you have any pictures or a detailed spec I could look at? Atmo Cossies in Westfields are pretty rare (yours would be only the 5th or 6th that I know of for sure) so any info you have would help me to help you. cng1
The Cosworth engine is pretty much bulletproof. In natasp form you can get anything from 160-300bhp, it really all depends on the spec. With any luck the owner will have a printout from when the ECU was mapped. If it's got carbs though expect it to be thirsty and I'd advise budgeting for a conversion back to injection. If the've fitted a T9 rather than T5 box then expect it to be suffering a little. The T9 is cheap as chips and has a lot nicer shift than the T5 but is a lot less robust, listen out for whine from the box. The diff will be fine, I'm on a 7" LSD rather than the beefier cossie one and despite >50k miles and >300bhp it's still just like new! Pit Bull
Many thanks for the quick response. I will attempt to get the answers to your questions in the next couple of days as the car is not local and the owner is away today. Cheers, Jim

Blatman
Hey Maude... I own an Atmo Cosworth too as does Stuart Mckay and Tom Whittaker who drives his Millington Diamon engined car in the Speed Series. Chris Elworthy has one and IIRC there's one in Cornwall somewhere. Steve Robbo broke his one so the engine could be anywhere. Juan Solo has a Pintworth (Cossie head on a Pinto bottom end)... I think that's all the ones I know of for sure, making Pit Bulls one the 6th complete car I know of, assuming he's not buying one of the ones already mentioned... Mark Stanton
Just be careful - quite a few years back there was an atmo cossy built by a guy near stourbridge who wedged the engine into a narrow chassis in doing so he removed various structural members - Looked the dogs nads even if it was green with yellow nose ........... but a car to be avoided Hopefully car is long gone and stripped out........... but you never know

I had a sit in a red narrow bodied car about three years ago on an rs ownersclub day at Donny, there's another one to add for your list? What colour / where is etc is this one you're looking at pit bull? Cheers, Mark.
