I thought I knew, or has it recently gone mad??

I've been looking for a couple of things, and almost regardless of how little or how much I put on the search line (with or without the AND word, with or without "", upper case, lower case, italics, greek or just plain shouting) I just get loads and loads of stuff that's not related - unless it's matching on any letter in the word I'm looking for - in which case, as a search engine, that's brilliantly pooo

Blatman to the rescue please ??

edited to say : ok, ok - I guess it helps if you can spell Search

What you looking for?

Just when searching in general for example I select topic title only enter my search e.g CVH modification, select the forum then hit search.

Like OB1 says you then get lots of unrelated results ???

& I can't find

Hi guys,

The key is just to search the 'Topic Titles'.

At the bottom of the search form there is a section labelled 'Search In' and you must select 'Topic Titles' only or your going to get hundreds of results.

Especially if you are searching 'CVH modification'. In that case, every single occurance of CVH will be found even if it has nothing to do with Modification and even if it occurs anywhere in any topic.  If you were to search for CVH AND modification then only occurances where they are found together will be found.

The search function works ok for me.

But this does show why it is very important for people to title their posts properly. A useful and correctly titled post will then be relevant for future searches on the topic.

I need a beer. Nearly home time now.

CVH AND modification in the last month only gives me this topic ;)

CVH AND modification

...proof that the search function is indeed working effectively  :D

It works then, and wonderfully demonstrated.  ;)

I had similar probs and went through a whole bunch of stuff with Blatman and others to understand. I think they key thing for me was finding out that the search engine matches the string anywhere in what it checks

i.e. the search explanation says that foo* matches foo and foobar but I think it also matches "bofoo" and "buffoon". Which gives lots of matches you don't recognise.

in fact I'll do a search and check after this post.

David.

back again. . . . :)  it does work the way described above. the search engine is too clever and consuming too much effort by finding any match for a string even in the middle of words.

Hint for webmaster. . . just search for start of words not mid words and cut down on server workload when searching.

Speaking of searches.... I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

Who sang that?! LOL!  :p
