How much do you earn?

Recommended Posts

Following on from Harv's poll about safety, and what people consider to be a reasonable amount they can justify to spend on safety equipment. I thought it might be interesting to find out what the avergae earnings of people on here is. To give a guide as to why somes peoples definition of reasonable varies so much from others.

Obviously, if you don't want to vote then please don't, and I don't for one minute expect people to actually post what they earn. Unless anybody wants to...

Just a bit of harmless curosity, that done by poll *should* remain annoymous.

Why ? ? :bangshead::bangshead:

Does it really matter. Anyone reading this will have a PC, and presumable a Westfield or something similar at least.... so can surely afford a helmet of some description. I doubt there is anyone on here who couldn't raise £250 if their life depended on it.

It's more the percieved risk and the 'it will never happen to me' that I expect will affect who spends what on safety equipment...

Perhaps a % of total 'car related spend' spent on safety equipment would be more revealing ? ? ?

That probably would be more revealing. I'm just curious thats all...

Just because people have a Westfield and a PC doesn't mean they have masses of disposable income. I guess what I'm after proving is that some people on here probably earn a lot less than most people realise.

I personally bought my car before I bought my house, and should the worst happen and I write if off on a track, that would probably be the end. But, that is a risk I understand and am willing to take.

If you don't feel it is worth while poll then, please don't spoil a bit of harmless fun for the rest of us.

Thanks for listening.

I didn't intend to ruin anyones fun Martin,

I think I know why you did this poll, I was just trying to make a suggestion, that it isn't a question of what disposable money people have, as I presume we all have some, it's more a case of what risk people feel there is.

If you asked someone, would you give me £250 rather than have your head crushed, I'm sure they would all say yes, but spend £800 on a full cage, or buy food for the month, or a new watch... whatever your income level, you way up the risks more than the costs.

I'll stop posting on this thread if it's a pain for others, that's not my intention, I just wanted to add my views on this.

The cost of safety is an intriguing topic to me.

[/soap box mode on]

In my industry, one method of justifying safety expenditure is to consider how many equivalent fatalities (EF) can be prevented - where EF is defined by deaths + major injuries/10 + minor injuries/200 - and then the cost of the safety benefit. At the moment 1 EF is values at around £1.3m I think.

So we do the sums and if a mod costs, say £20m to prevent 1 EF, then it can be deemed as not cost effective. If a mod costs, say £100k, it's a no-brainer and it's done. The problem always comes where the cost is somewhere between, say, £1m and £5m. This falls into a grey area and the basis of all assumptions made to derive the answer get challenged, and often they are not robust.

Then there's "public perception". Now everyone wants to be safe and we all make judgements on our tollerance to risk. We all generally drive cars on the roads where 10 a day get killed yet great fuss is made about CJD - and I have every sympathy for sufferers, don't get me wrong - where the numbers are a minute fraction of car related deaths.

There's never a right answer to this, only the answer that's right for an individual.

Enjoy your day

I'm supprised by the result's so far I was expecting the majority of people to be earning around 30k.

As for the safety issue

I for one wouldn't be able to afford to do half the things to my car or afford some of the safety equipment without the old man owning half.

And seeing where the highest neumber of votes are I'm not supprised that Martin feels the way he does.

For some people in the higher income brackets £250 is nothing for the people in the 15K-20K bracket thats up to a quater of there take home pay.

I know safety is important and shouldn't be taken lightly but something is surely better than nothing. If you can afford to have the high spec gear great but stop preaching to the rest of us.

Ohh I feel better for that.   :D

It's all relative though.  Just because you earn £30k+ doesn't mean you have more or less disposable income.  Peoepl with the higher salaries usually have a larger mortgage so therefore only have the same amount of disposable income.

Obviously that's my opinion but I don't think I'd be proved wrong, unless of course some have had a windfall & have no mortgage (lucky bugg3rs!;).

Anyway, I'd have more diposable income if I didn't put it 'all' into the house.  I've no Westfield at the moment & just pondering what to do, I've got to go halves with my Dad too.

If I wanted to, I could buy my own car but with children on the way within 2 years I'd rather not have that sort of debt around our necks........all IMO of course.

I voted in the wrong bit to  :bangshead:
