cast iron Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 After owning a Westy for many years, Ive learnt that some of you out there now a little about lightweight parts and losing unessessary weight. Ive got myself into a race with a narky git with a slightly lighter car than me but less power. But I always think less weight is the way to go. Now Im driving a Triumph GT6, and was wondering whether anyone had any pointers. Ive got aluminium backplate and front plate, GRP parts to replace fiberboard. Is there anymore I can do? Cheers. A lad in our club has a hand built alloy bodied space frame TR6. It cost originally £80,000 to build, and now it is up for sale, although im not sure of the price It is a real work of art. The motor has about 250bhp as well Quote

I hope you both get thrown off Because thats the kind of thing that can cause accidents and / or damage to other folks cars and worst of all to the drivers and / or passengers and instructors So when I drive at a trackday Im a danger to every one? so therefor everyone (seeing as though most other people drive fast) is dangerous, and therefor trackdays are dangerous? Im sure if trackdays were dangerous they wouldnt be allowed. Quote
steve_m Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Im sure if trackdays were dangerous they wouldnt be allowed. Want to re-phrase that ? Quote
Westfields Rock On Posted September 18, 2005 Author Posted September 18, 2005 Trackdays aren't dangerous, well not when Ive been anyways. Everyones played nicely. Quote

The point Mark is making is that you are actively seeking to drive as fast and as close to the limit as possible. A track day is NOT the place to do that. By all means build up speed and enjoy a spirited driving day, but driving at 10/10th's should be left for a proper race or other MSA event. If you really want to find out who's the fastest, get a non race Nat B licence and do some sprints where the timing is properly sorted, and the day properly controlled by marshals who are *expecting* a race... pistonbroke Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Dunno what the hang up is with Cadwell [ edit erm I mean Mallory ], it isnt really a test of driver skill IMO Should only take you half a dozen laps or so to learn the quick way around . Dont know what youll prove though exept one car faster than tother Quote

Its a bit of banter between us. If he's quicker, then hes quicker. am not going to freakin nuts, driving on the tip and risk my baby just to prove him wrong. If I wanted a full on, bash the way to gain an inch I would, but in the proper place. Quote
Blatman Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 In which case, the "who's faster" question doesn't get answered 'cos you could both claim to have gone faster... so leave your car alone and intact and when he claims to have won, just say that you had planned to lose 50Kg's in weight and add some power... Karl Woolf Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 the race is between a 870 kg GT6 with 150bhp, and a 720kg Spitfire with 120bhp. cough splutter i used to have a spitfire (my first car 19years ago) and those weights have got to be a tad optomistic For whats its worth best weight saving would be a interior strip and a GRP front end, loadsa weight in that. My old man has a historic racer GT6 full fibreglass body on big slicks, never driven it though Quote
pistonbroke Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Or Mallory, even whoops , 1 clanger Quote

John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Remove the passenger seat, carpets, fit perspex side and rear windows and investigate a plastic / aluminium rad off something like a Maestro / Montego. Oh yes - and a lightweight battery Quote
