Shrops_paul Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Excuse my ignorance - whats a pinto engine? Some sort of ye olde ford unit predatinga zetec? ta. Quote
deano.1 Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 its a cortina or sierra engine (single cam 8v) Quote
karlgurney Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 I believe it got the name from the car it was used in, a american ford pinto. Quote
Shrops_paul Posted August 15, 2005 Author Posted August 15, 2005 righto. thanks. easier or harder to maintain than a newer zetec? I suppose a 1800 zetec can be serviced like any other ford? Quote
mars0505 Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Paul, Iff you have the possibility go for a zetec 1800. The pint is okay but a heavy lump. The zetec is more or les lightweight and nowadays reasanoble cheap to get. Watch for an Escort zetec. A Mondeo zetec you'll have to change the flightwheel and clutch, waterpump, for an Escort clutch and waterpump. New camshafts in it and you'll have 130 - 140 bhp. Look on other treads in this site. A lot is writtten about it. Marcel Quote
scruffythefirst Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Both pretty easy to maintain, pinto would require a little more work (changing oil spray bar yearly etc) but both are pretty simple. I would have thought any garage would have no problems with either engine. Quote
Blatman Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 And if you go for a Zetec, get a 2 litre... Quote

Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Oil spray bar What am I not doing? Quote
Blatman Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Oil spray bar has me raising an eyebrow too. The only one I can think of that is removable is fitted to a Cosworth. It is an integral part of the pick up pipe, and sprays oil on to the underside of the pistons. And as far as I can see/remember, it doesn't need a yearly renewal... Or I'm missing something... again... Quote
geofff Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Oil spray bar for the cam I believe. It was always an achilles heel of the Pinto - cam lobe wear. Ta Geoff Quote
Blatman Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Ah yes... my mind was running around the Cossie head. Hadn't thought about the cam spray bar. Still, I didn't think it was a service item... Quote
geofff Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Hi, I'm not a hundred percent sure it's a service item. I read a tuning book somewhere about enlarging the holes in the spray bar - I think! Ta Geoff Quote
Martin Keene Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Not strictly a service item, but a notorious weak point. Probably well worth changing for the pennies it would cost Quote
