Peter Cox Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 ...that if you had wiped the seat before you sat down, you would have noticed that there was no toilet paper before it was necessary. ...that I don't know what "diaspora" means (and I am intentionally NOT trying to find out). ...that, ironically, given that we're being asked to be wary about people with wires sticking out of their person, the guy who was shot 8 times in the head at St Ockwell, was an electrician (actually, maybe that's "realisation" and not "learning"). Eccentric_Rich Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 I don't think the guy getting shot by the Police at Stockwell and the circumstances that led to it are anything to joke about Peter. Quote

GuyH Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 Worrying isn't it! An innocent man being shot in the head by police, when he is already lying face down on the floor makes me v angry. As for diaspora... it's not a very useful word to be honest so your probably not missing out. Quote
Vinny's Westie Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 And his arms were away from his body as he fell over as he was running away. Quote
Blatman Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 Hmmmm... you're being chased by several armed Police who shout "STOP, ARMED POLICE" several times. You then run in to a tube station carrying a rucksack, still refusing to stop, a day after a ruckasack bombing or 4 on the tube. The cops were put in an incredibly difficult position. Would it have been better to chance it and hope he wasn't a suicide bomber about to kill/maim hundreds of people? What would you be saying if they had let him go and he did kill and maim. You'd be saying, "bl**** Police, why didn't they just shoot him?", wouldn't you? Yes it was very unfortunate. But if a copper shouts "STOP, ARMED POLICE", you don't run away, you stop and ask if your hands are up high enough... Sir... Quote
Stuart Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 I'm with Blatters here. Was in New York last week. There was one of the new subway cops being interviewed on TV. He was asked what his criteria was for 'stop and search'. His answer was simply 'Asian looking, 18-35, carrying a rucksack. Sorry if this pulls in lots of innocent people, but the aim is just to protect the citizens of New York'. Then they interviewed a few Latin Americans, none of whom had a problem that they had been picked out in error. This is acceptable in America - imagine the outcry here if we did this. Now is not the time for liberalism. Quote
pistonbroke Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 Totally agree A real tradgedy need not have happened What on gods earth made the poor guy run away from an armed police squad ? Given the circumstances what other option did thepolice have ? Very sad but thats the state of the world we are in ATM you could say its one up for the terrorists Quote
MARSDALEBEAR Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 Did they shout? Were they in uniform or plain clothed? Not having a pop at the cops, but could he have thought they were muggers? Sad in any event Quote
Blatman Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 What on gods earth made the poor guy run away from an armed police squad ? I think his visa had expired, so he was here illegally. He would be called an "overstayer", and we have plenty of those in London... And cops *always* shout when they're armed. They have to otherwsie they'd be up for murder. There were plenty of witnesses, and no doubt CCTV footage with sound to corroborate their story. Otherwsie they'd have been arrested, rather than just taken off firearms duty (normal after a shooting) while the incident is investigated by the Police Complaints Authority, who investigate *all* Police shootings... IIRC... Quote
Mark Stanton Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 What on gods earth made the poor guy run away from an armed police squad ? Perhaps because he knew he was an illegal immigrant, wary of being sent back to Brazil, if caught I work with a couple of Asian guys who have noted that they would not have any problem being stopped and searched "just because of their colour" and have also pointed out that this country has gone PC mad especially where innocent lives are at risk Quote
Frau Vesty Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 This evening's news said he had a student visa, which expired 2 years ago... Quote
GuyH Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 Like Blatters, I live in London and am a regular tube user. It's hard to know what you would do in any situation, and the police had a tough call at Stockwell. We don't know the story while they, of course, were there at the time. But I like to think that if I had been sitting on that train and seen then all rush on, I would have rather they restrained him even if it meant a little more risk to me (only a little with him lying face down and 3 coppers on his back) instead of taking a life. Lurksalot Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 One thing confuses me I heard he was being followed as he was a suspect so what the devil did they wait til he got to the tube before intervening Quote
Frau Vesty Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 I thought (and I may be wrong) that they tried to stop him before that, but he legged it and ran into an underground station and onto a tube. Quote
