scott beeland Posted July 22, 2005 Posted July 22, 2005 Since BT Yahoo have upgraded us to 1 meg from 512 k we've had continual connection issues and far too many spontaneous disconnections. Customer service has been crap so we're shopping around. Quite like the sound of AOL Silver package (we really only need 512 spped). Anyone using it? Is it ok? Quote
a4gom Posted July 22, 2005 Posted July 22, 2005 never used AOL for broadband, used them for dial up and they do like to take over your pc. I'm with plus net, good connection but crap speed, 2mb connection actual speed 135kb?? Quote
Blatman Posted July 22, 2005 Posted July 22, 2005 Neverevereverevereverevereverevereverevereverever use AOL. I use Pipex. No problems with spped or connection in 3 or 4 years. They rate well on adslguide.org too, which really is the place to go for choosing an ISP... Quote
pistonbroke Posted July 22, 2005 Posted July 22, 2005 AOL OK. If , as said , you dont mind your puter being infested with aliens and the only way u can ever get shot of em is to chuck it in the skip Quote
rossi Posted July 22, 2005 Posted July 22, 2005 blueyonder from telewest, had it for nearly 3 years now and never had any problems with connection speed or downloads Quote
scott beeland Posted July 22, 2005 Author Posted July 22, 2005 blueyonder from telewest, had it for nearly 3 years now and never had any problems with connection speed or downloads Got no cable. Will have a look at pipex though Quote
scott beeland Posted July 22, 2005 Author Posted July 22, 2005 Pipex doesn't save me a lot of cash Quote
Eccentric_Rich Posted July 22, 2005 Posted July 22, 2005 I have to agree with Blatman, never ever install AOL products on your PC, the only way to totally get rid of it in the future is format the hard drive. Rossi's advice is good if you live in a Telewest area as their cable modem service is good value for money if you combine it with another of their products ('phone line). I would call BT (never easy) and insist on an engineer visit - don't be fobbed off by the first line support people who don't have any technical expertise at all. All the ADSL suppliers are using BT to supply their services from the exchange to your house so if there is a local fault with your line it'll still be there if you change suppliers. Quote
Blatman Posted July 22, 2005 Posted July 22, 2005 Pipex doesn't save me a lot of cash Yeah but the BT product doesn't work... The Pipex connection I have is a quality product, well worth the small premium. No download limits, and it'll be 1meg as soon as BT get around to updating my exchange. Add in 50megs of web space for free, and a pretty good corporate help site, I reckon it's the nuts. But don't take my word for it. Go to the "Compare ISP" section of adslguide.org and see for yourself... Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted July 22, 2005 Posted July 22, 2005 My Pipex connection has been excellent; have to agree on the AOL comments though, they're almost but not quite, as bad as BT themselves. Most of the broadbant & connectivity issues the IT side of my business gets called on to solve are usually from one of the two companies. The best company we usually come across, though not the cheapest is Pipex, which is why I picked them myself. AOL software seems to be better these days, but used to suffer dreadfully from compatability problems with other software on the PC; and as it seemed to get itself into every nook and cranny... Quote
Stuart Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 512meg unlimited from V21 is £16.99 per month. No probs with speed or connection. If you want to limit to 60 hours per month then it goes down to £12.50. Quote
Rick S Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 Plus net is the way... 2Mb unlimited for 14.99 per month. It restricts P2P during "peak" hours (seems to be 1am to 12.59am) but you can opt out and go to 21.99 for the premier pack if you want. Get free setup (59 quid worth IIRC) and modem (25) if you want; you will pay a proportion of it back if you leave in the 1st 5 years. I'll probably not leave for at least 3-4 yrs so I'm not bothered, and ebuyer have a 1 port firewall modem router for 19.99 (QF48448) instead of plus net's modem. Downloads at 270kbps ish. Always amusing to download short videos (no, not that sort) as I've seen the 'burst' speed over 1,000... Cheaper than my old aol dial up too! V happy with 'em so far... HTH Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 A4gom, I am on Plus Net too and the speed, according to adslguide, is pretty well what they claim. What's more, it's £14.99 a month unlimited downloads at 2meg. Can't ask better really. Quote
steve_m Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 All you change by switching from BT to another ISP is different servers and a different company sending you a bill, the connection to your house will still be with BT so you need to get that sorted out but having said that, Pipex are likely to get it sorted for you quicker than you aproaching BT on your own.
