gearbox position and prop noise

Last weekend I fitted a new clutch. After refitting eng & gearbox I found that the back of the gearbox was knocking against one side of the transmission tunnel. Today I lossened the eng & gearbox mounts & jacked the eng & tried to repositioning them. I did not manage to make much difference to the ammount of clearence at the back of the gearbox, but thought is was prob sufficient. went for a drive and was alarmed by momentary scraping noise on sharp right bends. The english axel seems to cause the prop to be closer to one side than the other but I cant understand why it can be rubbing at the prop and diff flange when they have not been moved. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it just a matter of trying to reposition the eng & gearbox again?

Probably. At a guess you have a Type 9 5 speed fitted? This makes the problem worse - not much room at all in the tunnel then...

The diff flange can sometimes make contact with the chassis, but that is usually on severe bumps and two people on board, rather than right handers.

This is a common problem. Usually the diff input flange is of the smaller Anglia diameter to give clearance instead of the Escort one (3.375" v 3.625" dia)

You could also make the panhard rod adjustable at one end to try and shorten it to pull the axle over slightly.

Did you remove the prop from the diff? If so, slacken the bolts and centralise the 2 mounting faces. They be running slightly askew due tob the clearance on the bolts.

I am not sure of the size of the diff flange, only know that its the same size as the prop flange! But yes I did separate the diff and prop, and yes it is a type 9. By altering the panhard will I not just be pulling the axel squint? :durr:
