End of the story

A friend of mine who is a retired mechanic found the problem. I had installed a new rev counter in the winter, and for some reason (don't know why yet) the rev counter, which gets its signal from the coil negative side was drawing so much current that the spark was too weak. He disconnected the rev counter and the engine started on the first try.
