James Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 ...er... sort of get the impression that I might not be as universally welcomed in the WSCC as I thought... Michael C (aka Vicar of St. John High Legh & St. Paul Over Tabley) Michael, I feel sure that you are as welcome as ever and I suspect that we would all fight strongly for your absolute right to enjoy and hold your own beliefs even if some of us don't share them with you! Well said I heard this on the tv recently "I may not agree with your point of view but I will fight to the death for your right to express it!" it take all sorts in this world but at the end of the day as long as you like westi's and your not a subscriber to Max Power everyones welcome! steppenwolf Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 It was originally said by S. G. Tallentyre, referring to Voltaire although it is often attributed to Voltaire himself. - his exact words were:- "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Quote
Blatman Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 Me too. I have a hard time believing that a politician came up with it on a live TV show though, so I'm waiting for some-onen to pipe up with the origins of the saying. Edit. Thank you Stepps... It's a fantastic sentiment though, and one which I'm sure most of us believe in. It's why we fight wars, mostly these days against people who claim to be fighting for religion, rather than freedom... Bazzer Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 Why is casual sex for recreational purposes wrong ? I agree putting others at risk of STD's is wrong but I don't see what is wrong with the above if performed in a sensible manner between 2 consenting adults ? Why is monogamy considered to be moraly supperior ? I can understand why this would have been bad in days gone by when there would have been heath reasons due to ignorance. But in an educated society I don't see what the problem is. Bazzer Quote
markg Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 just a shame the blair broadcasting corp is reporting the popes death, when we could have had some reporting of the labour election frauds in birmingham! i suspect if it had been the conservatives, we would have heard about it non-stop for a week! Blatman Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 and i hope i speak for all on this site that your as welcome here as anyone.. Yup. IMO, the WSCC has a somewhat Catholic approach to it's membership... Quote
Nick M Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 I don't agree with the Pope's stance on condoms, but: [Devil's advocate] if people took the whole message, i.e. not sleeping with anyone other than your spouse, then HIV wouldn't continue to spread at the same rate, condoms or not. It's people picking and choosing which bits of doctrine to stick to (or being ignorant and the Pope/Church not bringing that correction) that causes just as many problems...[/Devil's advocate] That is so true, a point I made on a very similar thread on blatchat. Basically, at the end of the day, religious or not, keep your manhood in your trousers and only take it out for your wife and you'll never get AIDS or any other sexually transmitted disease. It's good to hear somebody else airing the same common sense view. Too many people these days seem to think the Govt/Religions/Local Council should protect them from various evils, then complain when the Govt acts like a Nanny State when all that's required at the end of the day is a bit of personal responsibility. Except there's more to it than that. There are thousands of children born in Africa with HIV and ignorance and lack of testing (particularly in remote areas) goes a long way to meaning it's often too late to prevent them passing it on to someone else, someone who may in fact be their spouse.
