steppenwolf Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 ...er... sort of get the impression that I might not be as universally welcomed in the WSCC as I thought... Michael C (aka Vicar of St. John High Legh & St. Paul Over Tabley) Michael, I feel sure that you are as welcome as ever and I suspect that we would all fight strongly for your absolute right to enjoy and hold your own beliefs even if some of us don't share them with you! Michael C (aka Vicar of St. John High Legh & St. Paul Over Tabley) You'll certainly be welcomed. I do however suspect you'd stand more chance of converting a crossflow than the WSCC congregation. All walks of life are represented here, just some more than others! Quote
Frau Vesty Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 You won't be welcome for much longer if you make terrible jokes like that Poor Buzz learnt that lesson ages ago Quote
Renmure Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 In a society that accepts and promotes the notion of various 'leaders' governing, or advocating governance, over seperate elements of our daily life its a dead certainty that no one leader and their views will be universally popular with everyone. As a non-catholic I would take issue with a number of the pope's edicts on womens issues, condoms, abortion and probably a long list of others. However, we are about to be bombarded for the next 4 weeks by our 'would - be' political leaders who are likely to tell us whatever it is that they think we want to hear in order to gain our vote. They will have canvased a sample of our opinions on a wide range of issues and then present the most popular in a package designed to appeal to most of the people, most of the time. They will smile, grin, turn on the smarmy style and present a patchwork of short term populist policies with little ideological foundation and, if nessessary, will offer something with a different slant to it when speaking to your next door neighbour if they believe it will do their own cause any good. I think we can assume that the pope said what he believed and believed in what he said, and was likely to have believed the same thing from one day to the next. I think I prefer that. Whether or not I would chose to remain a member of an organisation where my views digressed to a large extent from the leadership of that organisation is a seperate matter. Just my tuppence worth. predawson Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 or the millions of Africans who die of AIDS due to no condoms allowed to be used.Shake up required and modern day church for the god botherers needed. I don't agree with the Pope's stance on condoms, but: [Devil's advocate] if people took the whole message, i.e. not sleeping with anyone other than your spouse, then HIV wouldn't continue to spread at the same rate, condoms or not. It's people picking and choosing which bits of doctrine to stick to (or being ignorant and the Pope/Church not bringing that correction) that causes just as many problems...[/Devil's advocate] Totally agree. I think our vicar will have to ignore the anti-religion comments in the same way that all the Westfield owning policeman on this forum must ignore the posts about having no front license plates, driving pre-SVA etc. etc... Are there any policeman on this forum? Quote
adhawkins Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 Are there any policeman on this forum? I've often wondered that, but surely, there are enough on here that there must be? Andy Quote

Basically, at the end of the day, religious or not, keep your manhood in your trousers and only take it out for your wife and you'll never get AIDS or any other sexually transmitted disease. It's good to hear somebody else airing the same common sense view. Too many people these days seem to think the Govt/Religions/Local Council should protect them from various evils, then complain when the Govt acts like a Nanny State when all that's required at the end of the day is a bit of personal responsibility. Peter Cox Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 I don't disagree about the monogamy bit but your argument is based on so many flawed premises that dismantling it would be a turkey shoot. However, it's good to see we can have a tlread that combines religion, politics and sex once in a wlile Quote
Mark Stanton Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 it would be a turkey shoot. Is that like a "pheasant to run over" Quote
