Hi,

I’m Steve and this is my first post.  I’m not sure what sort of abuse you guys and gals will be giving me when I start asking stupid questions, but here goes anyway.

In November last year I bought my 1st Westy.  It's an SEiW, 1600 (dare I say it......?...CVH).  Twin 45’s naturally, Kent CAM, Gas flowed head, bla bla...

I want to do my 1st service ready for this year's fun... and I’m looking for advice on what I should change / check etc.

In particular, advice on which Oil to use, and hints and tips on working with this engine would be nice.

So - an opportunity for all those CVH supports to shine, and equally an opportunity for you CVH sceptics to tell me I should have bought a Zetec....   :D

Watch out for the "join the club" abuse :p

ps timing belts are always a good thing to check/replace

Thanks - I reckon i'll handle the abuse, just about.  Timing belt was changed 2 years ago, I would think it should have some life left in it?  I will check it out though, I don't think i'll be going very far if it snaps....  any thoughts on oil?

I'm not a CVH expert, but you can't really seem to go wrong with a good quality 10W40.

And you should have bought a Xflow...:D

Listen to what he says Steve...X-Flow drivers know all about oil (they use enough of it :D)

Thanks Martin..  10/40 (Synthetic ??) - X-Flow have some good reviews looking at previous posts... but being my 1st Westy - I'm just pleased it hasn't got a lawn mower engine...

Ford recomend CVH cam belts are replaced every 3 years or 36,000 miles on 6000 mile service intervals or 5 years or 40,000 miles on 10,000 mile service intervals

Do you know the age of the engine ?

My CVH ran very sweetly using Valvoline fully synthetic  ;)  ;)  :D  :D

Thanks Mark - sounds like 10/40 Fully synthetic from Volvoline will be what I shall use.

Nick - Engine was new from Westfield/Ford in 1991.  Engine has done 11,000 miles and had last belt change in 1992 looking at the records - so probably a good time to change it based on your comments.   I assume standard Ford belt is OK?  Any thoughts on best way to clean K&N filters? - any tricks?

If it is 12 years old...then change the cam belt now  ;)

I always used Mobil 1 motorsport in my cvh and it was  :t-up:

Clean the filters with petrol and don't smoke when you do it...then re-oil the filters with k&n filter oil.  It maybe worth emptying, washing out and re filling the cooling system  :)
