Mark Stanton Posted January 9, 2005 Posted January 9, 2005 Sorry Stuart - I set mine up ages ago and don't have it with me at the mo so can't remember Quote
gee_fin Posted January 9, 2005 Posted January 9, 2005 POI file and info here - http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/uksafetycameras.php But as said, I installed the latest file on the Tom Tom Go and it missed three cameras on the A1 (nr Grantham) that have been there for at least three years. I use a Morpheous Road Pilot for speed cameras, that's never missed one. The database on that is very well maintained (even picked up the temporary ones on roadworks round the M42). The main difference being that the pocketgps file is an unverified voluntary system, whereas the Morpehous one is a verified incentive based system. However, don't let that detract too much from the Tom Tom Go, as a SatNav system it is absolutely excellent. Quote
Jan Coombes Posted January 9, 2005 Posted January 9, 2005 I use a XDA and tom tom. Used to have a HP PDA but the XDA is a phone too. Quote
Pew Posted January 9, 2005 Posted January 9, 2005 I invested in a Road Angel for accurate notification of cameras then used it's GPS output capabilities to feed to TomTom on my PDA. Great combination and portable between cars including my Westie. The link from the RoadAngel is simple via a cable from Holux (Here) which will power both the PDA and RA. If you need more GPS cable between the RoadAngel and your PDA simply use a computer PS/2 extension cable use for KVM switches. Updating the RA is simple just via the web and a USB cable. Quote
Liam Posted January 9, 2005 Posted January 9, 2005 I use a XDA and tom tom. I'm thinking of investing in XDA as it allegedly can be hooked up to a powerpoint projector for presentations. Have you tried it? Any other views on XDA performance? Quote
Enterpryse Posted January 9, 2005 Posted January 9, 2005 XDA II, don't bother with I. I'm on Orange without too many hiccups, the main one being the staff don't seem to know its available for their network. There is also a firmware revision, aimed at bluetooth pretty much. Tom Tom does slow the machine down especially if you start it without the GPS connected. Never bothered with powerpoint on it much prefer my little lappytoppy. I think HP now do a combined phone & PDA, chap at work has one and is a little smaller. Quote
Liam Posted January 9, 2005 Posted January 9, 2005 Never bothered with powerpoint on it much prefer my little lappytoppy. Thanks I normally use a laptop but often have to fly to appointments and lugging a laptop and pp projector about can be a problem as together they exceed hand luggage limits. Quote
Jan Coombes Posted January 9, 2005 Posted January 9, 2005 i-mate are the company that make them. they are 400MHz I think Hp do one with a built in phone, or you can get phone add-on's but I think the price starts going up. I got my XDA out of contract so it was a bit more, but if you are going to get a contract one, you can get the XDAIIs or XDA3 for £50 Quote
Mark Stanton Posted January 9, 2005 Posted January 9, 2005 I prefer to keep my phone separate from PDA and use a Bluetooth link up to connect when necessary Quote
RobHaines Posted January 9, 2005 Posted January 9, 2005 If you go down the PDA/GPS route you could look at the Mio 168. It has an builtin GPS receiver which you fold down when not in use. It will quite happily run the Pocket PC version of TomTom and will do most PDA type stuff (although I don't really use it for that). It's probably not as good as a dedicated car system but is good if you want cheapish solution. Rob. Quote
Bob Green Posted January 10, 2005 Author Posted January 10, 2005 Thanks for all your replies, very interesting. Perhaps I need to learn a little more about SatNav before I come to a decision although I will still be looking at the idea of plug it in the dash, switch on, dial in the location and listen to the bird with the horny voice! Thanks again. Quote

greeny Posted January 11, 2005 Posted January 11, 2005 I'm also looking into getting GPS but want it on my mobile (Nokia 6600). Seems like TomTom mobile and Route 66 are the main ones available but which one is best? Route 66 is a bit more up to date and appears to have a few more features but the TomTom is equally as good. Any opinions? Thanks Quote
Mark Stanton Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 Just gotta say I've upgraded software to the lastest Tom Tom 5 and its top notch (IMHO) Software upgrade to version 5 also includes maps of Scandanavian countries, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Benelux - 6 CDS of European maps all for about £47 direct from Tom Tom Update is available for PDA and Tom Tom Go options Quote
