Snapped Drive shaft

Been making a real effort to get out in the westie over the hols and get it set up how I want and this is how it repays me.  A snapped universal joint which took out the rear hub and showered the TVR driving behind me in aluminium

Haven't contacted westfield yet but I'm sure these parts aren't cheap.  I can't see them in the catalogue either.  Does anyone know anywhere else I can get these parts from?  Has anybody come across drive shafts snapping under heavy acceleration or was it just my unlucky day?!  :bangshead:

Oh my god how much?!   ???  Thats not the same as mine though.  Its a 1990 ish car.  Its running a MK2 escort diff not the freelander one.  Westfield don't seem to have any reference to the rear hub mounting casting either.  The pictures are in the catalogue but no part number or price.

There is a new set on ebay with hubs etc. These are new so they will still be available from Westfield. Alternativly if the hub is is usable and not cracked there are many places who should be able to make you up a shaft. The yoke on the stub looks okay where it goes into the hub so could be reused, depends where you are in the country but Dunnings and Fairbanks in Leeds, reco prop in Luton, Morris and Bailey or is it the other way round? These should all be able to repair it. Might be worth checking the other side as I would suspect that something siezed in the joint and broke, unless you had mega horsepower and mega grip I doubt that the shaft would brake unless something internal was siezed.

This happened to my son's Westfield last year and it was a bit of a nightmare getting the components for it as Westfield do not keep full records of all the parts supplied for use in 'older' cars ( my son's car was a 1992 completed in 1994 ). He took out the top wishbone ( nasty dent ), broke bits off the aluminium upright and demolished the braided brake pipe ( I thoroughly recommend that you check very carefully for collateral damage too ). For safety, I changed the bearing, and bought new hub nuts.

I had the aluminium upright repaired beautifully by a specialist ali. welder, had a new brake pipe and new junctions made up including the chassis joint, had a new top wishbone fabricated by Westfield to my pattern ( the type that 'should' have been fitted to Simon's car were different for some reason lost in the mist of time ) and bought a low mileage drive shaft stub from  a member on this BBS ( thanks Arm ).

Be aware that the drive shaft may well have been modified for length specially - ours was although it was based on the Sierra rear end. Our joints were 'Tripode' joints and I would suggest that your style are an earlier style than that in that they do not appear to CV types.

The cost was as follows:-

Postage of Wishbone to Westfield              7.75

Wishbone                                                   91.64

Brake Hose                                                 23.50

Welding of Upright                                      50.00

Drive Shaft stubs                                      60.00

Drive Shaft Boot Kit                           9.89

Drive Shaft Boot Clips                           2.50

Bearing                                                   21.00

New Hub Nuts                                        9.61

Insertion of Bearing and Driveshaft peening 20.00

Total                                                  295.89

Hope that helps.

Might be worth thinking about changing to Sierra shafts and Lobro jionts as this type of failure is fairly common. Might have to change diff as well :bangshead:

westfield did make a uprated drive shaft for your type .but they were not cheap.

you cant fit later shafts because joints wont fit in uprights. later ones where bigger to allow larger cv joints.

you may have to buy new uprights and drive shafts.

one mod that can be done is use early sierra drive shafts[not as big cv joints] and mod to fit.but not a five minute job.

your best option is to buy new and sell old uprights ,if still ok. :(

I think Jeff's idea of a phone call to Bailley Morris or Dunning and Fairbanks is the best starting point. The UJ's are most definitely NOT Westfield specific, and a driveshaft is a driveshaft, so availability shouldn't be an issue...

I would look vary carefully at *both* the uprights and bearings as suggested too. It may be that you only need to replace one...

Made price enquiries at both Bailley Morris and Dunning and Fairbanks for a prop, just before Christmas.

Only Jon Dunning actually got back to me, though bearing in mind it was a week and a half before Christmas, I can't really hold it against Bailley Morris, they have an excellent reputation.

However, from speaking to Jon on a Monday, my prop was with me the Wednesday of the following week. At excellent rates as well. Can definately recommend Dunning & Fairbanks.

If it's any help:

Thanks for the advice, if anyone sees any second hand bits give me a shout

Cheers

The upright looks salvagable enough. check for cracks in the main structure and get the mess milled up. The driveshaft also looks servicable at a glance so maybe all you need is a new hardy spicer UJ  - about 15 quid. Check these for widening apart with a caliper.

The driveshafts usually shear or twist if there is too much power. If the UJ gives up like this then more than likely it hasnt been greased recently and has started to wear.

Yeah.  i thought about getting the upright welded if I couldn't find a replacement.  The drive shaft is wrecked at one end though definately as it has destroyed  the surface that the needle roller bearings run on.

The drive shaft is wrecked at one end though definately as it has destroyed  the surface that the needle roller bearings run on.

The 'surface that the needle roller bearings run on' should also be replaceable, and would come as part of the UJ service kit...
