SEiGHT
To cut a long story short, my sister has imported an MX5 that she is flying down from Scotland to Essex to collect this Saturday. The car has not been registered yet due to various dangler-ups (i.e. customs nazis) so it obviously can't be taxed/MOTd or insured. Her ticket is non-refundable so she really doesn't want to put it off and buy yet another plane ticket. So what are her options ? Trailer ? Trade plates ? Specialist insurance ? Anyone know what the legal situation is for driving it back without MOT/tax. If she could get insurance, could she say she's driving it home (600 miles) for the MOT, or does the MOT have to be done at nearest point ? Any help/advice greatly appreciated ! ChrisG
AFAIK, it would legally need to be trailered up there. I am fairly certain it cant be driven on the road legally until its fully registered, and you cant use the MOT thing as that has to be within a "reasonable distance" - I would assume that 600 miles is outside this tolerence (unless you booked about 15 MOTs at intervals along the M1 etc ) There is some stuff on things you need to do when importing here, I havent read it properly but it does seem to have some stuff about what happens when the car is back in the UK before registration Chris
Timo
the car can be insured on the engine number and if it has foreign plates you could chance your arm and drive it home. the registering and mot bit is the easy bit especially if its a japanese second hand import, very little modification generally required. if you didnt have trailer which is the safest option i have a number for a contractor who would call, collect and take it up to Scotland for around £100. it would save your sister another air fare
S8ight
if the car has its foreign plates on any decent insurance company will insure it on that reg. if it has whatever the country of origins equiv. of an MOT then its covered in this country. she cant register it UNTIL it has a valid UK MOT
