I am looking for the 130hp version of the 1800 Zetec and would appreciate advice on how to identify the engine compared to the lower hp models. In particular is there a code in the engine serial number to look out for ???

OK.  What you need is the engine number

The identifying marks are should be on the flange above the starter and on the head alongside the thermostat housing. Only the 130 has oil spray jets fitted to in the sump (this allows oil to the piston skirts). If a lower power engine is upgraded using different cams, it is not necessary to fit these spray jets.

The cams come with identifier rings between the lobes but these have been changed many times. There is another post somewhere explaining the indentifyer codes on the cams

The complete number comprises 3 letters denoting original installation, capacity and power, two letters denoting month and year of manufacture and lastly a unique sequence of digits, I think normally 5 or 6 in number. The digits do not matter much, it is the second pair of letters that are needed for the date of manufacture.

RDA - Escort/Orion 105

RDB - Fiesta 105

RQB - Escort/Orion 130

RQC - Fiesta 130

RKA - Mondeo 115

4th letter - month of manufacture

5th letter - year of manufacture

followed by a number (not particularly important)

The usual problem is distinguishing between the D and the Q.

If you have a lower power engine, it can be upgraded by simply changing the cams.  I picked up a pair of 2 litre cams for £50 which brought me up to 130bhp spec.

Hope this helps, sorry if it is a bit disjointed I have pulled to gether infor from other posts.
