streetdragster
Hi All, new to this forum, been scouring the internet for months and only just round this font of knowledge! heres what i'm planning on doing- i want to buy a pre built westie for around £4500 proberly fitted with a 1600cvh, ovh engine or similar. i then want to convert a 2000cc Mondeo Zetec-E engine (which i already have) to turbo power using the guide on www.zetec-turbo.co.uk. then put this into the westfield. but i have a few concerns and questions and wondering if anyone on here has done this or something similar and can give me some guidance. i can see it being a very tight squeeze, anybody know any 'tips' on how to make life easier? (is there a 'magic' inlet manifold that solves all problems?) cooling the charge air, has anybody used an intercooler or is it a charge cooler job? people with intercoolers have you had any issues getting the pipes round the radiator? engine management, i think i will need a stand alone engine management system to control the zetec turbo engine, i hope to use pretty much all the zetec sensors but i would like to NOT have to use a MAF/AFM. Any body any suggestions and/or prices? will it fit in a narrow bodied westfield? oh and a couple of dumb questions- does a westfield sei mean independant narrow bodied, and a seiw mean an independant wide bodied? Thanks Matt
peterg
Easy questions answered - Yes, SeI is independent narrow and SeiW is the wide body version There are several turbo cossie Westfields around plus the odd turbo CVH but I don't know of any with a turbo Zetec cars....the Zetec will fit in a narrow body but whether you can get a turbo and everything else in the same space I couldn't say
Turbowestie.co.uk
Hi, If you look HERE you will see how tight it is to fit a CVH turbo in a SEiW, there really isnt alot of room. In regards to your inlet manifold, it isnt too challenging to fabricate a inlet manifold using the standard manifold runners (providing you use cast ali one and not the later plastic one for obvious reasons) and welding on some trumpets and fabricating a pressurised plenum around them. Boost cooling really has to be charge cooling via a water cooled charge cooler and running the water cooling matrix in front of the rad, so you can keep your intake system as short as posible (you wont have the room or frontal area for a decent sized intercooler). I doubt you will have enough room in the CVH chassis with the type nine gearbox (this box may very well struggle with the torque for your zetec turbo anyways), as the engine sits alot further forward than the zetec one that i use, basicly there will be very little room in front of the engine to mount the charge cooler, charge cooler pump and air filter etc. Engine management wise i use a lumenition 560c ecu which uses std zetec sensors and a cosworth map sensor and zetec TPS, there are no MAF meters on this system I will be at Stoneleigh on Sunday weather permiting if you want to have a look around and a chat? streetdragster
great! thanks for your help. Is stoneleigh a regular kit car meeting place or is it a show this weekend that i don't know about? I live in Blackpool you see and its quite a trek. Thanks for the info on the car, i had a look on your website, and it is a very tight squeeze! looks like i'm going to need either a wide bodied westfield (and i think i'm dreaming if i think i can get one of them for £4500! or alot of careful thinking and planning to get it into a narrow bodied car. do you know the ford engine code for the gearbox your using? I.E is it a MT75 etc. Your inlet tract? Is it like this- Air filter, then a pipe, with no intermediant components to the turbo inlet, the a pipe from the turbo outlet to your charge cooler, a pipe from your charge cooler to the end of the plenuim. (Where the throttle flap is?) I had a look at a mondeo before, and it has the plastic plenuim so i now know what i'm not looking for And engine management (sorry for all the questions). Did you map it yourself? where did you get it from and can you give me a rough price i can expect to pay for one? Thanks ALOT for your help Matt
Turbowestie.co.uk
The inlet track is just how you descride i.e no MAF I am running a MT75 gearbox (Thats why a zetec chassis is required because the gearbox tunnel in larger than the cvh chassis to clear the gearbox at the bellhousing end) EMS from http://www.autocar-electrical.com/ realisticly for a managment system you can map yourself your have to be looking at around a £1000-£1200 for a boost enabled ECU, mapping software and dongle plus the wiring harness (but made my own harness as it saves £260 and will obvioulsy have the perfect wire lengths) and ignition amps and sensors. And yes i mapped it my self (still not quite finished at the top end, a lilttle rich but safe) Glad to be of help

RS WST
Hi all I'm in the process of building a Zetec Turbo Westfield. Had the engine in an escort before for about a year. managed some fast 1/4 mile times but it seemed pointless in a FWD as it just kept spinning the wheels. As you can imagine its not quite as straight forward as you can imagine. However all the bits are out there to make it a reasonably painless exercise if you know where to source the bits. Problem is however it is a very expensive exercise and unless you want to keep spending £1000's your best sticking to normally aspirated!! The rally cross guys manage to get 660bhp out of them running race fuel. A friend of mine recently got 467bhp on the dyno at 28psi and has put the engine into a drag racing focus but the engine stands him at £12k Cheers Austen PS. If you want to know any more about the conversion let me know
