Bob Green
Hi guys Well he has fitted the hard drive and also fitted a 512 memory stick (?) and I am amazed how much faster the machine is. I guess from power up to the internet page (without dial up) is less than 15 seconds on Windows XP as against maybe 50 secs to 1 minute before. He also sorted out the driver for the modem (previously a universal one, bearing in mind he was trying to explain it in a language I understand), updated the BIOS (??) and the machine is transformed. Anyway thanks for all your many comments, they have been valuable. Bob
gregh
for faster bootup under Winxp download bootvis from Microsoft here unpack it, then choose optimise system from the menu, it will reboot once, then rearrange files to speed up boottime. SCSI is no faster than IDE for boot time on desktop PCs. regards, greg
