Chris Elworthy Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Apart from Mark, how many of you lot have actually attended Silverstone during the GP weekend over the last few years ?or ever for that matter. Dont knock til' you've tried it I've been to every one since 1975 (yes I know even numbers were at Brands until 86! Never paid to go yet and wouldn't.(thanks Ken for the last 2 - much appreciated) I WOULD pay to watch BTCC, Legends, F1 Stock Cars, Speedway, Sidecar Speedway (f*cking nutters) and rally-cross. Best bit of the GP weekend is the Red Arrows Quote
Chris Elworthy Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Hmmm, Guess its all about Fags! Rob I'm not sure the sexuality of the F1 lot enters in to it Quote
Chris Elworthy Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 I did hear on the Radio this morning that there is going to be a possible alternative to F1, called the A1 World Series (or similar) which will have single spec. F1esque cars competing in an off-season series around the world on a nations Cup type basis. (this could even be the saviour of Cosworth Racing with an MBO). This is true but its gonna be a winter series which will sit in between the F1 season finish/start Buzz Sorry - thats what I meant by off-season. Quote
Chris Elworthy Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Whatever your personal opinion is of Bernie - one thing that is a fact is quite simply he's avery astute and excellent businessman - and a money making business is F1 tis a cold fact Couldn't agree more, if making money is your only objective. If you put so much commercial squeeze on your suppliers / franchises that they do not survive, then your profitable business is not sustainable, and from that viewpoint he may not be so astute. Quote
Nick M Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Apart from Mark, how many of you lot have actually attended Silverstone during the GP weekend over the last few years ? or ever for that matter. Dont knock til' you've tried it Last time I attended the GP was 1988, although I think I went to one of the qualifying days in 1989 too. Basically, it's too 'kin expensive for what you get. I'd rather spend more money on travelling but have a better weekend at Le Mans. When you compare the price of tickets for different grand prix around the world you start to get a little bit peeved with how much they're asking for the British one. Plus they limit the numbers because the facilities can't cope with too many people and that just serves to drive the price up for the punters who do attend. Basically, no thanks, I'd rather watch lawn-mower racing... Quote
Pembroke Pat Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 I've just noticed that F1 is no longer appearing in my 2005 calendar. Advertising only has value if some one is watching. Not that I want any cancer sticks p.s. I thought Williams were clever with their advertising Niqitin or what ever it is called. Quote
Blatman Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Last time I attended the GP was 1988, Small world. Me too.... Quote
Nick M Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 I was sat in one of the grandstands near the end of the pit lane. Getting cold and wet I might add. As I recall it took about 4 hours to get out of the waterlogged mudbath of a car park.... Quote
Blatman Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Yup. I was round at Brooklands, soaked, cold and bored. Too far from the action to get a decent view, and 4 hours to get out was the icing on the cake. I was glad I didn't pay for the tickets, and vowed there and then never to do so. Gimme LM, GT, Touring Cars or a decent day at Castle Combe any day... Quote

I reckon we could have a WSCC outing to one of the VSCC meets next year - reckon there'd be enough interest for a group of us to meet up, have a spot of brecky and then drive to somewhere like Silverstone ? StuartMackay Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 It will be interesting to see if the FIA ratify this p**sing contest between Jackie Stewart and Bernie...I heard somewhere that there is a covenant that the British, French, German and Monaco Grand Prix must take place as the basis for the world championship to be valid..... The couple of million quid missing is nothing compared to A)what it brings in income to Silverstone and Northamptonshire area. B) how much Ford have just thrown away with Jag and Cosworth I think Bernie will be a very nervous man...maybe Tony B and he should take up residence in Bermuda where the team owners and the British public cant lynch them?? My last Brit GP was 1982, and back then at least you had a full three days entertainment with plenty of support races such as Touring Cars and Historics. I agree with Blatters and many others here.....the GP circus has lost the plot when it comes to entertainment........do the British public really want to watch Mr Schumacher win yet another Brit GP? Quote
Mark Stanton Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 the GP circus has lost the plot when it comes to entertainment........do the British public really want to watch Mr Schumacher win yet another Brit GP? May be because us - the average paying punter whatever we pay (or not) for our tickets are totally insignificant small fry in the big corporate world of F1 finance and backing It would possibly far easier for the organisers to simply reserve all grand prix for corporate hospitality - it brings in far more revenue than public gate receipts Quote
Blatman Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 ...I heard somewhere that there is a covenant that the British, French, German and Monaco Grand Prix must take place as the basis for the world championship to be valid..... I think it forms part of the Concord Agreement. A chap at work said he'd heard this on the radio... Quote
adhawkins Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 There was talk of there being no French GP this year, so I'm not sure just how accurate this is. But I've never read the Concord agreement, so what do I know? Andy Quote
