OT - Quick estates

Recommended Posts

Posted

Fed up with my saloon.

Want an estate.

Must NOT be front drive and must go better than good. Must be under £20k, around £15k would be nice. I need something with a bit of image for my job so defo not an Impreza or similar boy racer nonsense.

List so far :

Audi S4 Twin turbo - 315bhp when chipped

Merc E55 AMG - classy

BMW 540i - not that quick

What else is there ??? Do Volvo make a quick 4WD car?

I'm liking the Audi at the mo.

Dare I say it have you considered a diesel ....

Merc E320 CDi chipped up will pull the doors off most things on the road....

They have just started coming on to the market for 15K ish level.... on about a X or Y plate. Rock solid residuals, classy motor, good economy, great towcar, huge boot, goes like stink ....

T5R was available in 4 wheel drive, the ideal wolf in sheeps clothing  :t-up:

Volvo V70R also 4WD and fast  :D

may be a little more than you budget though ? not sure and not many about also there is the XC70 or Cross Country model although reasonable fast probably not fast enough

BMW 330D. Quality, fast enough for non-track use and frugal.

Downside: nobody will let you out at junctions. :D

New Legacy is nice. Can come with a 3 litre flat 6. No image problems, in fact the full leather interior would put may German cars to shame. Probably the only true 4WD on the market (all the others use some crappy electronic control).

You can get a leggy (70 -100K) but full history V70R AWD on an R plate for less than £10K. £30K odd new.

Having driven/owned the front wheel drive 850R estate and after test driving a V70R 4 x 4 Estate I would say the two wheel drive is better. Bizarrely the 4wd version felt dynamically dull although very safe and quick. They also had many more reliability issues with the 4 x 4. The 2wd drive one was obviously compromised occasionally on outright grip, especially wet exits off roundabouts in 2nd gear (!;) but overall handling/pace I found much better.

Tis a great car, lovely buld quality, nice seats, lovely hi-fi if you get the one with dolby prologic and still a bit of a Q car for those not in the know.

Only downside, mpg low 20s. late teens if you are on a mission - especially bad with the 4 x 4.
