Managed to have an accident today... (not in the Westy thank god!!;)

All my fault... I was reversing... (black) Cavalier came out of nowhere (very quickly) - I didn't see it:durr: Straight into the nearside rear of my Landy...

From the skid marks (about 10-12 metres) I doubt if he was doing the required 30mph... technically still my fault though...

Mind you - I have a scratch under the rear bumper on my Landrover, his K reg cavalier is a write-off!!! (N/S wing, bonnet, door, bumper, N/S lights, prob also O/S suspension where he went over the 8" kerb)

May be a good chance he doesn't speed past the house anymore... I'll just have to nurse my (protected) no-claims bonus for a while.

I knew there was a reason I drove the Landy to work!!! - Just glad I wasn't nosing out in the Westy...

Get some photo's of the skid marks and preferable some police measurements.

Your insurance co is bound to contest the issue, they always do, so mention to them that you think he could've stopped if doing the correct speed. They'll get all excited at not having to pay out and do all the work to get his insurance to pay.

NCB safe :D

I'll second that. Well worth a call. Make sure you get plenty of pics from all sorts of angles and do it ASAP.

Good luck  :)

Oh I've got loads of pics... But technically as I was in reverse it's my fault no matter what.

C'est la vie...

You may have been going backwards but he was going forwards and would have had a better view of the road therefor if he was paying attention would have seen the Landy ( not hard to miss as they are so damn big) and should have been able to stop in time.

If driving in an residential area then you are taught to expect cars coming off drives etc.  It soundsd like he saw you, tried to stop but the car was going to fast.  I would imagine that you have a good case for 50/50 and it sounds that your Landy won't casot much to fix.

Good luck. :)

I`ve had two cars write themselves off on my Hilux trucks (owned them for 18 years now  )

One never bothered to claim as he hit me up the A***  :p

The other insisted a cash deal, no insurance company involvement (it was my fault) until I insisted on ringing his broker/police there and then and all of a sudden he dropped it all and managed to drive the car preseumably cos he had no insurance.

Last little shunt was a bloke in an old (really old) bmw 5 series on M1.  I had scratches, he was mullered  :p  but I got false name/address and even no plate was false (b*****d)

Trust no one IMO

Surely your allowed to revers out of your drive onto a minor road, reversing out onto a Major (A)road would be a bit dangerous bit it's all down to due care isn't it??

Andy

P.S. My brother had an accident yesterday, some hairdresser type (New MX5) drove ito the side of his J reg Nova (NO body kit  ) crossing 3 lanes in Nottingham city centre.

I asked weather he had any whitnesses & apparently it was right in front of the Court house & there were two Coppers with Machine guns right there to see everything. :D  :D  :D

Our kids car will be a writeoff as it aint worth much but he would like to keep it as all it really needs is a new(scrappy door) he can live with a bit of pannel damage on the front & rear wings.

Does anybody know what the procedure is with regards buying your car back off the insurrance co. & what happens about the status of the car after the write off (the car is perfectly drivable, just un~ecconomical to repair cosmentic damage)

Andy

Sorry to hijack the thread.

My knowledge of this is a bit sketchy but I believe it all hangs, these days, on the category that the insurer's inspector puts the car into. I cannot remember the actual categories but they range from a non-negotiable write off (in the case of burn-out, etc) through to uneconomic but practically easy repair. If you can speak to the inspector he may be willing to categorise the car leniently. The sell back value will be about 20-25% of the car's market value a second before the accident in my experience. My wife's "N" Escort was given a category that made it acceptable (if not economical) to repair because there were no safety issues. In some cases of older cars being written off in the past (the situation has changed recently but I don't know exactly in what area) you can insure it only third party after the repair.

The road outside my house is an A-road... Although it is a 30mph/residential zone...

My insurance company are saying if I was in reverse it's my fault... No matter - lets see what the other guy says when he claims!

Best not to get stressed about it, I'm covered and the no claims is protected - and at least it wasn't the Westy!
