Cateringvans, really worth the extra?

I'm not quoting trackdays, although the ones i've done with caterhams they appear quick. I was at Silverstone this weekend and it would appear obvious that they are quicker than the kitcar catergory. Also if you delve into the 750mc site to gather the caravans times they are regularly quicker than other kitcars. Now I know there superlights we are talking about but we are not talking about standard WFD's either. I also now about the top SS boys on here but they are a few and look at the modification work to the front end thats required to get them were they are   :p

Thing is race circuit times can't really be judged in the same wasy as sprint and hill times  ;)  ;) Its quite a different discipline  ;)  ;) Race cars are a differing spec to sprint cars  ;)

and look at the modification work to the front end thats required to get them were they are
not that much  ;)  ;) Circuit race cars can be as equally modified where the championship regs permit it  ;)  ;) The 750MC have a reasonable set of regs when it comes to modifications and don't allow toooooo much  ;)  ;)  ;)

There is a lot to look at in any comparison  :D  ;)

Well I suppose alot of general price increases can be put down to more and more people being interested in sevens to track but wanting someone trained to build it for them (like me)! I remember growing up, Sevens were very much a home build thing, but from the second hand market, there does seem to be an awful lot of factory builds around.

Even if I had the technical ability, the tools and the time, I wouldnt' have the time in London! Maybe in 30 years or so when I retire :)

Mark, I wasn't referring to sprint or hillclimbs at all, just on race track experiences and times. Is there 'out there' a quick WFD that's upto Superlight pace (230bhp) that does still have a standard WFD front end suspension ??? Bear in mind these caravans are road going.

I'm not trying to put WFD down, god damn it I've got one, but my mate has a caravan which is easier to drive at pace round corners, thats MHO. I'm realistic in this open Seven market and am proud of my production.  ;)

As a newbie, doubtless this arguement has happend menay times before. A year ago, at the Donnington show just along the road from where I live, I had narrowed down my choice of 7-alike to a Westfield or a Caterham and fully understood the history of how both were where they are now. I had a good chat with the Westfield guys, went through the options of build, sat in the car, bought the catalogue etc etc. Good feeling.

Went to Caterham exhibit outside - could I get any one to even look at me never mind speak to me.

Decision made. I want to be comfortable spending my hard earned money and Westfield made me feel that way. there are a lot of "soft" issues in business and I think Westfield understand that whether they know it or not. Let's hope I am not proved wrong after I pick up my £14ks worth of bits next weekend!

Yeah you could - not a good spec one though. I costed one up - theres no point having an Ultima with a weedy engine, less than top spec brakes, suspension etc and as soon as you start doing that, you get close to 40k :(

Was at Bedford yesterday and there were 3 Caterhams there - they are nice, theres no doubt about that, but theres nothing that Caterham sell that would make me want to swap the XTR for.

What makes you think that Ash Masons car is not road going. It would eat a Caterham with 230bhp and several others in Road going class would have a good chance against them at half the cost.

Guy's (er, Westy's) car is also road legal, which is specifically why I listed them. Class 2B cars are road legal, and run on non sticky rubber to boot...

I've been searching the internet for lap records since yesterday for comparisons, but they are few and far between. Which is a bit of a b******* when I'm trying to make a point :0

I would also suggest that sprints and hills are a "purer" form of timed discipline, 'cos there is no-one else on track with you to spoil that perfect run. It's just man and machine against the stopwatch. In a race situation, unless you are in 1st place with a clear track, there are too many variables to be able to call it a fair comparison when looking at times, rather than results... IMHO of course...

I have driven both in anger (well as fast as I can :p ) and I really could not see that much between them. I know I was going reasonable quick as I got fastest Caterham driver on the day out of 30 people.

I had a customer visit me last week at work.  Turned out he had built a couple of Caterhams in his past, and he now does single seater track racing.

When I said I sprinted a Westfield he made the 'cross sign' with his fingers in front of his chest at me!  bl**** cheek! What do they know ???
