Drum brakes & rear axle

Hi,

I've just rebuilt my live axle and rear 8" drum brakes, I've also been searching (barn door) and have drawn a few conclusions and questions:

I need to replace the backplate to axle bolts (4 of) with 10:10 rather than the nice stainless ones I bought, right?

lower spring (on escort drums / rearmost on sierra) should be on the lowest set of holes on the shoes? Sierra should be on the next set up (forwards)?

Spankingly clean self adjuster mechanism should be set to maximum inwards with brand new shoes and drums? But what is max inwards?

Thanks

Geoff

P.S.

Expect a question about 'axle breather replacement' over the weekend when I rip the one of my other axle to see how they fit - you can pre-empt this question - anyone?

P.P.S.

How do I use the emoticons, they look cool!

The easiest way to get all this information is to get a Haynes manual for an Escort MkII from your local scrappie. My local scrappie charges only £1 for tatty museum piece manuals.

Self adjuster 'snail' should be set to its smallest radius position to get new shoes closest together.

It won't however cover fasteners: Back plate set screws should indeed be high tensile but do not expect to see them numerically marked (8.8 or 10.9) as they are UNC (5/16" ISTR) rather than metric

Richard's right, I got my escort manual on ebay for £2 odd.

The backplate bolts are indeed UNF 5/16. Found HT ones hard to come by and my hardware shop charged me through the nose for finding them - 50p each ISTR for 1 1/4 long (got them that long so I could fit nylocs on the back rather than studlocking them.

Spose you could tap the axle casing to take bigger metric bolts if you wanted.
