Westfield SS1 / Sports 2000

SS1

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I recently bought the only SS1 / Sport 2000 (different people seem to call it different names) car that Westfield ever built (around 1988) - it's the one that looks like a Can Am car (if you squint)

It has been used on the track apparently, but I recently put it back on the road. Unfortunately at a sprint venue, after posting a faster (unofficial) time than a Megabusa powered Westie, the diff seized and has broken the crank/keyway thus trashing the valves at least.

What I want to know: is the car worth more in race trim 230bhp 4 speed straight cut box etc or will there be as much interest if I drop a std 16v in at approx 180bhp mated to a 5 speed box ?

I have to sell it and I'm not sure which spec to re build it to.

Also if anyone has any info on it I'd be interested.

Thanks

Mark

An interesting question, and quite probably inanswerable...  :0

First and foremost is to try and establish a value for the car. But if the car is a 'one-off', it is going to be difficult to put a realistic value on it IMO, whether it be in road-going or full race trim.

Two possible scenario's here;

1. The car is a possibly a collectors piece, in which case it needs to be returned to it's former glory to be worth it's full potential in beer tokens, or,

2. The car is novelty value only, as it is a one-off, so potentially spares/repairs could be a nightmare. I certainly have never heard of this car before (I'm guessing few others have either, do you have any pics you can post up-just out of interest.....), and would be apprehensive about purchasing such a beast.

What power plant is it? (my guess is VX, judging by year/power output....)

Cheers, Stu :t-up:

I understand that it was intended to be a road car - in the photos I have from a Kit car magazine article - it was a pretty ugly road car, fitted with a 1600 lotus twin cam, it was re-engineered in 96 for track use, lowered approx 5" and fitted with a Vauxhall 16v with pistons, cams, carbs etc.

The modern paintjob and huge rear spoiler (for looks really) make it look very good IMHO.

Parts aren't a problem as I have the original body moulds, mechanical parts are from the usual suspects - Mk 2 escort, spitfire rack etc

I have photos but I don't know how to post them.

Yep that's the car, but I have done a fair bit to it and it is now on the road, albeit that I have just broken it !

Is it based on a Standard Westfield Chassis?

SE ???

SEW :)

SEi ;)

SEiW :t-up:

Any Idea how much it weighs?

Might be worth selling it as it is then the prospective owner could fit what hed wanted?

As for how much ??????????????????????????

Beeing road legal must add value. :t-up:

P.S. I quite like the look of it, not enough CF for my liking.

Probably based on the same principals, it's a bit wider and roughly the same wheelbase.

Weighs probably the same as a std Westie.(ie a bit more than a stripped out racing one)

I thought about that, hence the post, I don't want to make it into a road car if people would only want to race it, the 4 speed is too low geared for road use really but cost £800 odd and was perfect for sprints, but it has only got a tonneau cover so is a bit impractical.

CF ?

Damm thats a fine piece of car!

What sort of price were you thinking of if you were going to sell it? what have you used it for?

After spenting time fixing it, MOT'ing it, etc I've only done 100 odd road miles and half a day on the sprint track before the diff screwed the engine.

A decent Westie with 180bhp is rare to find below £8,500, but would have a better finish and weather gear so I think it must be worth around £8,500 as a road going track car with the 230bhp engine, spare set of wheels, full set of moulds complete with a spare body already made.

I must admit that it doesn't look as good close up, as in the photos, the panel gaps etc are definately racer rather than road car.

The question still is do I rebuild it and to which spec ?
