I'm curious..

Hi, i'm only 15 (please carry on reading).., and i have had an interest in kit cars, especially westfields. I have a few questions to ask current/former westfield owners:

1) http://www.westfield-sportscars.co.uk/s2nd.asp . That 2nd hand sport 2000 is only £18,500, now to me that seems remarkably cheap, and i was wondering why it is cheap, as imo kit cars are a class of sports cars so £18,500 for a second hand sport car is cheap.

2) If i got that sport 2000 ^^^ how much would it cost to insure for a 30 yr old?

3) Would a westfield be a car that would be suitable for a 30 yr old, i can easily tell that i'd need another car aswell, as the westfield wouldnt be a day to day car for many people.

4) Are they cheap to run, and are they reliable. Also what is the mpg for a sport 2000?

Thank you very much...

Luke.

£18,500 for a second hand sport car is cheap

Not so, you can get lotus elise's for under 12k these days.

how much would it cost to insure for a 30 yr old?

Not a lot, certainly less than an elise or mx5

Would a westfield be a car that would be suitable for a 30 yr old, i can easily tell that i'd need another car aswell, as the westfield wouldnt be a day to day car for many people.

Suitable for any age.  Some people make do with just a westfield as their only car, but most people have one as a second car.

Are they cheap to run, and are they reliable. Also what is the mpg for a sport 2000?

Reliable if looked after like most cars, depends on the state of tune of the engine and who built it.  as for mpg you shouldn't have to ask.

All these questions have been asked before so may I suggest a search before Blatman turns up :p   I'm sure soemone will reccomend you join the club or get down to your local area meet because I'm sure soemone will take you for a spin and discuss the options.

Yup. 18.5K for a second hand Westfield is stupid money, only paid by the un-initiated, I'm afraid... Anything over about 12K (except in *very* exceptional circumstances) and it had better be the fastest, best prepared, most reliable Westfield ever built, or forget it. Have a look at the For Sale section further down the page. Plenty of excellent sub 10K Westfields there...

Insurance. A 30 year old with a clean licence should be paying less than 300 quid a year, as long as you don't live in a high risk postcode, and the car is garaged. This would almost crtainly be a limited mileage policy, with the limit likely to be 7,500 miles.

Cheap to run is dependant on how it's driven, as well as how well it has been built and maintaned, as Scruffy has said.

Fuel consumption? Who cares... :D:D:D

Having said that, a car on twin 40's or 45 Weber carbs will see around the mid 20's mostly, and perhaps the low 30's on a motorway. This will drop to between 5 to 10mpg on track days. A car on throttle body injection will see high 20's/low 30'smpg easily, with near on 40 on a motorway run. This will drop to around the mid to high teens on a track.

Thanks for that.

I'm not sure if my local area has a westfield club, i know of 3 catherams in my town, but i have only seen 1 westfield (not sure of model).

I'll have a look for a westfield club in my area, but most probably there wont be one, but the local cities will most probably. Is there a list of westfield clubs, as i live in halifax, west yorkshire.

What do you mean, after 7,500miles the car wouldnt be able to be insured?

Nope. It means that if you breach the mileage, you would almost certainly have to pay more money to your insurers, although they'll want the money *before* you go over. If it's a second car though, and assuming you (or the main driver) is in full time employment, you'd be hard pressed to go over. I'm sure you could get an unlimited mileage policy, but it is likely to cost significantly more. It'd still be a truck load cheaper than an Elise, or a 1 litre Saxo...

Oh, that's 7,500 miles per year, not 7500 miles ever....

Oh...and when you say if i am in full time employment id be hard pressed to go over, do you mean go over the mileage? And if i got an unlimted policy, it would be cheaper to insure a 1 litre saxo  :suspect: are you sure, as citroen saxo are common for first time drivers and i wouldnt of thought the insurance would be that much.

EDIT: Just seen you say its 7500/year

Yes, I do mean over the mileage...

Ask any local 17 year old how much a Saxo 1.0 costs to insure.

Some members on this board have seen or had first hand knowledge of first time drivers having to pay over a grand to insure Saxo's, I kid you not...

FWIW, my '98 Mondeo Diesel (all 90bhp, 3 grands worth of it, and the worlds most boring and least nickable car) costs me more to insure than my Westfield, which is worth *loads* more...

Yeh i've heard people getting 1.0/1.2 and the insurance being very.. high.

And i'm amazed at your modeo costing more to insurance than your Westfield. This is good news for me when i buy mine...

Also, can i just say thankyou for giving me this information, you guys have replied so fast.

Just bear in mind that you may struggle to find insurance at all for a spcialist car such as a Westfield if you are under 21..

I understand that, and i know i wont be getting one until at least 25+ minimum.

One more question, i'm going to become a police officer, do you think this will lower my insurance costs because i have car training?

I couldn't believe my insurance quote when i was looking into building mine.  i currently pay £300 a year (tpft) on a 1.8l cavalier (even more boring and worth less than mr b's mundano) and the quote for a cosworth engined dax, for me (age 21) was £500 fully comp.  Bit of a bargain really :D
