v7slr Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 Hah, that's not excessive. 49 computers reside at Chez Moi at the moment although I'm hoping someone is coming to collect a good lot of them this weekend. We have 8 in active use including the 3 servers in the pic above and 3 wireless laptops... and this is after I promised to reduce the number in the house [gulp, sorry honey]. I have built (well) over 100 PC's to my "standard" spec since Christmas, and managed to cram in a good proportion of my extended family one Sunday a few weeks ago for some basic training, all connected up on the local LAN. The house is wired with Cat5E, although I tend to use wifi almost exclusively now. Wired LAN connections are useful for when people come without a wifi card, or for quick building of a PC. I still think that for Mike's application 11g is excessive and more expensive than necessary. I have found the the first thing to put people off the new technology is the price. Get them interested in the cheap kit like this, and their interest is maintained. Even my Mom now has a wireless laptop connected to one of those cheap Origo Modem/Routers whilst my Dad has a desktop which is connected to the Modem/Router with ethernet. They're all hooked now and have webcams to talk to other members of the family through MSN. In fact, enthusiastic people are the best adverts for the internet and computers in general. I only got into Linux thanks to the Magnias. They're superb machines having an in-built Router, Firewall, 8-port 10/100, wifi with 128-bit WEP and MAC address filtering, printer server and 2 x HDD's for snapshot resilience. They're cheap on eBay now. I got the last 2 for £240 each with 2 x 30Gb drives but no wifi card. The other one has 2 x 40Gb drives and wifi. Considering they were originally sold for around the £2K mark, they're a bit of a bargain. There's a user goup for them too (isn't there always a user group?). They run on a special Toshiba build of RedHat. There are minor improvements that can be applied but essentially they're good to go. There's no monitor, mouse or keyboard connection so you connect to them using a web browser. If you've ever seen Webmin then you get the idea. It's not Webmin, but sort of similar. Fun isn't it? adhawkins Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 two linux boxes running FC1. Bah, real men use Debian Andy Quote
waynem Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 49 !! Not sure 49 machines would even FIT in my house..... That sure would be one helluva game of Unreal Tournament... My wife has banned me from buying any more, which isn't a problem at the mo as the Westy is bleeding my bank account dry... She'd say I could always sell a computer!!! Wayne M Quote
waynem Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 Bah, real men use Debian Had a brief try with Debian after a jaunt with Slackware, then Mandrake (RedHat in disguise) before settling with RedHat.. RedHat Installs seemed more Plug'n'Play than the others. Wayne M Quote
v7slr Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 OK, OK, OK... some (a lot) are in the loft waiting for that magic person to collect them (they're for sale). ... and yes, I must be a sad person for having that many. ... but I think I now have a PC for all occasions, including he all important one for TOURING (connects to ECU, connects to digicam, wifi in case Hotel is "sorted", small, etc). Just did a quick count... and believe that I have managed to have 19 in simultaneous operation once. Some being built, some being used, and some server'ing. Ha ha, good job I never actually look at the electricity bill and that I'm not subscribed to a 2Gb limited broadband service. Quote
