hilux Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 I use Pipex Xtreme Solo 500. Does what it says on the tin. No trouble in over 2 years, with speeds almost always faster than published Seconded. Pipex aint the cheapest but it does what it is supposed to, the servers dont crash and in 18 months I have lost service for 1 x 1/2 hour. Also get a router not a modem, the firewall is more secure and you dont need the main computer on when networked to others in the house. Quote
v7slr Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 Stands for Network Address Translation, and to expand upon what is already written, your ISP will assign you one-only IP address but you may want more than one PC connected to that broadband connection, so you implement a LAN with a Router. The Router uses DHCP which means it assigns all the PC's on the LAN side an address from a range it has dictated (you can usually change this range but for the life of me I cannot see why you would). Then, whenever a PC wants to "see" the internet the Router takes the packet from that PC and presents it to your ISP as having come from itself with the IP address dictated by that ISP. Actually, I think the previous explanation was better... Anyway, Ebuyer again will sort you out with a wireless Origo ADSL Router for about £60, and a Netgear PCMCIA wifi card for another ~£20. The Netgear cards are nice because they are low profile (don't stick out too far). Please be aware that these combined Modem/Routers are for telephone-based ADSL only. Those people with a cable service will need a slightly different Router, one without the Modem component. Also be aware that you can buy ADSL Modem/Routers with more than one ethernet port in case you do have some fixed-location desktops on your LAN. It might not be necessary, so a single port one will usually suffice. This can be expanded at a later date anyway with a cheap hub/switch ~£10 for a 4-port one. My little system is now based around this: ... but that's a little extreme for most people. Quote
oioi Posted June 18, 2004 Author Posted June 18, 2004 Stevie Smith - Not Waving But Drowning Nobody heard him, the dead man, But still he lay moaning: I was much further out than you thought And not waving but drowning. Poor chap, he always loved larking And now he's dead It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way, They said. Oh, no no no, it was too cold always (Still the dead one lay moaning) I was much too far out all my life And not waving but drowning. nig - i might just give you a call... Quote
adhawkins Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 ... but that's a little extreme for most people. Pah...our home network currently consists of 4 PCs (although admittedly one is no longer switched on), a 10/100 Switch, Wireless access point and a laptop. Oh, there's only 2 of us Andy Quote
v7slr Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 OK, some nice bits of kit: "wired" Modem/Router Very cheap Modem/Router (user comments confirm Modem included) Quote
adhawkins Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 How much for one that does 802.11g? (just out of interest). That's what my WAP is...dunno just how much difference the extra transfer does (I think it's 55Mb/s) but you can never have enough horsepower Andy Quote
v7slr Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 It's all a bit pointless unless you're moving large amounts of data around your own LAN because the 11Mb/s Modem/Routers are 22 times faster than your broadband connection. Mike only wanted connection to the internet. I'm not sure he has any other computers to warrant a 54Mb/s Modem/Router. Although Ebuyer appear to have a few 11g Routers, they don't seem to have a Modem built in... I've only looked through the first couple of pages though. They've even got some 108Mb/s Routers. Coo. Wonder what PC cards you need with them. Quote
adhawkins Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 Yeah, point taken. When I bought my kit, the 'g' was only about 20 quid more than the 'b' versions, so I went with 'g'. Andy Quote
v7slr Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 Has yours got an integrated Modem? I still can't find one on Ebuyer, unless I'm missing the point. Their ad's don't actually tell you much so you have to read through the user comments to get the full picture. Quote
adhawkins Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 Sorry, should have been clearer, I don't have a router. I have an access point. My linux box does the routing for me Andy Quote
v7slr Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 Cool. Another Linux bod. Those Magnias in my pic above are Linux. I'm learning bits and pieces of Linux as I go along. What are you using? A normal PC running on Linux or something unusual? Quote
adhawkins Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 It was a bog standard desktop (that's the one that's now powered off), recently I switched to a Shuttle PC (all in one job in a little 'cube'. Andy Quote
langy Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 Sorry, but i'll have to plug my elder brothers company Eclipse Internet He's based in Exeter, highly reputable and is in the same league as BT / Pipex / NTL etc. Go on, you know you want to.... Quote
waynem Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 [put_on_anorak] Get a Netgear Modem Router with Wireless (802.54g) (Can't remember its Model number, but I have a DG814 and its the dogs..) I'm another excessive computer user.. I have four PC's, Running XP Home, Pro and two linux boxes running FC1. There are more Linux bods than you think out there!!!! [/put_on_anorak] Wayne M Quote
