oioi Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 im dipping my toe into the world of home computing. ive bought a second hand laptop and am now looking for broadband. having had a look around for the same money i can get pipex solo 250kbs. free connection, free modem unlimited download etc the other option is wanadoo which is free connection, free modem 500kbps but limited to 2gb per month download. basically im surfing and emailing (up to 600 emails/day and if i join cam7 skys the limit). am i likely to exceed the 2gb limit? has anybody good/bad experience with either company? moomin Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 if i join cam7 skys the limit g'wan g'wan g'wan moom Quote
studbuckle Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 You'll never exceed 2Gb with e-mail, especially list mail, Surfing also will be quite hefty to use up 2Gb. Downloading Pron and Mp3's, now that's a different story Quote
adhawkins Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 Doesn't need to be pron...I regularly exceed 1 Gig a day at home. I download demos of upcoming games to try out. However, what happens when you hit 2Gig in a month? Do they turn your connection off for the rest of the month? Charge you more? Andy Quote
chrisbin Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 I download demos of upcoming games to try out. Andy "Thats what they all say........" (touche)) Quote
oioi Posted June 17, 2004 Author Posted June 17, 2004 i dont do games. i have a life... so 2gig should be enough then... i think they just charge you more if you exceed it. Quote
Blatman Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 I use Pipex Xtreme Solo 500. Does what it says on the tin. No trouble in over 2 years, with speeds almost always faster than published. I have no desire to even look at the competiton, no matter how cheap they seem. You also get 12 e-mail aliases, plus 50megs of web space for your own web site, should you want or need that sort of thing. IMHO, they're excellent. So good in fact that I have *never* had to contact the customer services dept..... Quote
adhawkins Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 Price Mr. B? (just out of interest). If NTL keep breaking their kit, trying to blame it on my kit, and having it miraculously start working again a few hours later, I might be tempted to change... Andy Quote
david.c Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 up to 600 emails/day How many You havn't got a job of sending spam emails have you? I use AOL..........not the cheapest.........but fast & reliable If you spell it pron is it more acceptable than porn David Quote
7SE Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 One thing to consider is that if you go for a package with free modem etc, you are effectively paying for that kit thru a higher monthly fee. A 'wires only' package may work out cheaper, or more flexible, if you can source your own 'modem' or if you want to go wi-fi. The latter may be handy with a laptop. I use PlusNet, with no complaints. Take a look at ADSLGuide for comparison advice. Useful forums too Quote
oioi Posted June 17, 2004 Author Posted June 17, 2004 up to 600 emails/day How many the se7ens lists that i subscribe to are like this: if you subscribe to the ne7ers list depending on how busy that is it can be up to 200 emails/day the tour7 list is a further 100 pre-tour and post tour but dies back down again toa more sensible 10 per day avg. the main se7ens list is circa 30/day, but again if something contentious is being discussed can be in the 100/day then there is cam7 (which i dont currently subscribe to) - this can be upto 500 mails/day but averages lower. I am also subscribed to a couple of yachting mailing lists as well. these are max 50 mails/day Quote
Blatman Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 Price Mr. B? £23.44 inc VAT per month. There is a cheaper option, as well as a faster option. When the 1M/bit line comes down to under 25 quid, I may well upgrade, although it'll mean a new PC too..... www.pipex.net Quote
timd Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 I have Pipex' 1meg service now, just upgraded from the Extreme Solo 500 one. As Blatters said earlier no problems, very good service, very little downtime in 4 years with them.. Quote
adhawkins Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 Thanks for that guys, I'll consider them if I do have to make a change. Oh, and why should a 1 Meg connection need a new PC Mr. B? Andy Quote
oioi Posted June 17, 2004 Author Posted June 17, 2004 cheers all. the adsl site looks good and gives a good comparison here Pipex comes out well, but the only thing it doesnt give is the size of the data sample. might consider a faster option though. i thought about wi-fi, but then realised i live in 1 bedroom flat Mike Quote
