turbo'ing my CVH

Hello again, people,

I've not got the cash to upgrade to a cossie turbo but, after all the cars I've been in over the year I still enjoy the 'kick' of a turbo the most.  That, and the noise of the wastegate :)

I currently have a 1.6 CVH with 40's

Q.  Could I slap a turbo on it?  I'm assuming I can't because I'd need a low-compression engine.

Q.  If it IS possible.  Would it be worth it or should I go looking for a complete engine etc from an RS Escort?

It's not the "mega horsepower" I'm looking for like a 300bhp cossie.  Although, I expect an increase from my mediocre 100 bhp at the moment (150bhp, maybe).

Q. Has anyone already done it or has one in their car

I saw a couple of CVH turbo engines on the PassionFord website.  90,000 miles for about 400 quid.

Thanks for any costs, ideas, etc

Neil

If im not mistaken the engine from the escort rs turbo is a cvh so just pick one of them up  ..Standard there about 150 bhp but can easily go to 250+

Should be easy to get as all the chavs/boy racers drive them so plenty of crashed ones

But they are low-compression engines?  Would my current engine need some work to get it ready?  I think it was a T2 turbo which, incidentally, means nothing to me...  other than my bro has a T5 in his Volvo C70.

Cooling would need some work, too, I presume.

And would my current ancilliaries - loom, fuel pump, radiator (must be bigger, surely) be transplantable?

The chav's on those Ford perfomance forums aint 'alf funny/weird. Yo yo yo ???

Hi Neil,

Talk to Mike Tansky, Farriday Engineering he is the CVH expert. He can offer an 1800cc conversion for reasonable money.Straight swap for existing unit.

There is no substitute for cc,s

I think it was a T3 on the Escort, T2 on the Fiesta RS, which had EFI where the Escort had MFI.

You would most probably create too much heat as your engine will have a higher compresion ratio than the Escort. I would have thought that it would be far moe cost effective to get a complete engine from an escort RS with the correct manifold and injection system etc, to eliminate most of the research and/or guesswork

Not sure if turbowesties website is still active, but might be worth a look...

That was fitted with a cvh turbo and was one good looking westfield  :p

If you look back in the 'cars for sale' archives i think the pictures are still there.......

Neil,

There was a guy in Northampton who built a superb cvh turbo...it was a black and was at the British Sports Car day last year..you may remember   ???

Anyway..IMR it was about 190 + bhp and a mean machine, so it can be done.  However he spent an arm and a leg on it and it wasn't just a simple matter of dropping in an old RS turbo.  As you say electrics, cooling etc etc all come into play.

As taffy suggests have a chat with Mike Tanski...he did my engine...136 bhp and I still have alot more to do and more bhp to get....when funds allow

You followed me on the last blat...so you should have a good idea what Mike's Magic can deliver, you won't be disappointed  ;)

Chat to Mark Coopers if he goes on Sunday, his cvh is rather rapid

I remember the turbo, Chris.  That was the one with the roof on.  The row infront of us if I recall.  I reckon I've got about a grand to throw at it.  It may mean no exotic holiday this year but, it'll be worth it if it's (fairly) easy to do.  Maybe a winter jobbie ???

I've been in Chris Good's Cossie westfield and Clem's Quantum Xtreme (just the cossie turbo striker to go).  I miss that kick and wastegate sound.  I've had my car for just over a year now and feel I need to spend some cash on it, having only bought an alternator for it so far.

*Chris - Are you going to be able to get those stoneleigh pic's to me for the website?

Thanks for the info guys.  Most appreciated. :D

Mike Tanski is looking out for a CVH exhaust manifold I think so if you have one there may be a cunning deal a foot.

Evening Crash,

So you want to throw a £1000 nuggets at it....I'm no expert but I would be very surprised indeed if you could upgrade to a Turbo CVH, and keep the build quality up, without doing all the engineering yourself.

Personally, other than throwing the £1K at my car I would suggest talking to Mike Tanski, it's the route I will be following later in the year.

But why the fascination with turbos, I would have thought that the lag and following sudden thump would make light rear drive car a right handful. IMHO, I get my thrills from driving the car, not surviving the car.

I'm trying to get to cambridge on sunday, but probably have the wife and baby with me, so only do the punting and picknic bit.

cheers,

Mark J
