Erm... I'm "Andy" that Garry refers to.... first time posting on this.... but been in WSCC since about '97...

Yer man from Sliders has some top tips – so just to add to those here's a couple of my observations from over 400 Westy laps there:

Noise - Yep my exhaust needs repacking but I've never had any trouble.... Equally, why risk it travelling so far to get turned away for the day for the sake of £30 of packing material? So long as you're not 'givin' it large' in the car park or roads nearby, I think they're a pretty reasonable bunch... unless they find reason to take exception and then they're far less jovial - especially if you're part of an accident or similar! Last time they noise checked me three years back and it was more a cursory waving of the meter somewhere near the exhaust and off you go.

Lapping - all well documented everywhere so will add a couple of tips.

Other traffic - I find there's a big 'them and us' attitude between cars and bikes, and unfortunately sometimes between nationalities too - without going into the ins and outs of cars vs. bikes or sounding like your mother, whatever, the upshot is we should really look out for each other on a quick lap... Easier said than done, I know, but better than going home on a breakdown truck or worse! No doubt someone will cut you up, turn in on you, weave.... whatever... it happens such is the range of abilities and machinery there.... and yep you'll be narked off and want to give'em the bird... just so long as you don't lower your driving standard to theirs things are normally ok. It's a while since I since a car park ruck...!

Fast laps - You see folks having their offs when they're getting to know the circuit and start cranking up the pace.... You'll start to learn certain sections and link them together...  you're first biggie happens on that bit which you thought you had nailed last time round, but this time you're carrying more speed, a little more to one side.... or whatever... you can run out of road quite quickly sometimes!!! I find only a couple of times a year, sections get resurfaced, cambers/grip levels change slightly, all little things that can have a big effect...

I got several video laps before they banned them - we knock out about 8m 15s bridge – gantry without traffic – that said maybe the time is not important - whatver you're pedalling you know when you've done a good lap and best maybe to leave it at that... In my last job I did some work at the 'Ring and also fair bit of track tuition on UK circuits (bit hard in a westy mind...) so any info (costs, car, whatever) pop over for a chat if you're at Mallory - yellow Westy / blue Seat tow-mobile...

I'm up for a Westy trip - any first timers will find it a top way to spend a long weekend, those who been before keep going back... 'nuf said!

Cheers. Mark.

FWIW, The status of roads round the 'ring may mean you have insurance cover while you're out there, just thought it was worth a mention.

Who can shed some light on that?

I know of someone who had an off last year and insurance company paid up with no problems as on public days The Ring is classed as a Toll road.
