Yeah fair point @joolz we’re made of sterner stuff up north I guess 😁

I was reading through thinking "They're right, why do I never want to do longer road trips?" and it's probably this 🤣

I admire anyone doing very long trips in cars of this type. Back when I was a student I had a dutton phaeton as my only car, I went everywhere in it.  I'm nearly 60 now, that gung-ho spirit has somewhat left me these days  😳🤣

I did the Long Way North this year in my 25 year old Zetec Westfield. 740 miles in 3 days. Absolutely loved it. And I'm 70

Don't ask Slasher about his T-shirt, you’ll never hear the end of it.

Having worked for Nissan for 30yrs as an inspector and test driver and seeing what goes in to making a car running on battery power - to do that as a home DIY project would take some serious knowledge. You could take out a whole system a replace it in another car but your definitely going to end up with problems with software, packaging, no support, updates missing, probably damage from the donor.. Try getting parts.

The lack of suitable training to work with voltages high enough to kill you would also be a stumbling block.

Just wondering how many do their own household wiring work? It's more than happy to kill you!

Just added sockets and lights in my garage. I was all set just to do a spur, but my old man swung by and said I needed to make it a ring main. But not too complicated

I’m in VW group as a mechanical design engineer at Bentley. Only had basic level training for EV’s and that’s enough for my role. Put simply, don’t go within a metre of the car when car hasn’t been isolated. The film they showed on 800V systems was, erm, quite scary. Under controlled conditions, a spanner was used to short, no glowing red, it instantly vaporised!

400V probably do same but maybe a few micro seconds longer.

There is no way I would entertain building an EV with my knowledge.

Yea, there's huge plastic sheep herders type hooks we have for areas EV's are being worked on. Even then you need different level qualifications to work on certain areas.

But if anyone did decide to make one I'd very strongly recommend getting a proper isolation switch that cuts out the battery pack safely. When reconnecting it you must wear x2 proper isolation gloves and a face mask.. Taking no chances! So be careful

The more I read, the more I'm happy to stick to my liquid-fueled controlled explosion engine!

Nope, I have a policy, if you can't see it, hear it or smell it but it can kill you, I leave it well the flip alone!

I'd be interested in what an EV sounds like when it's not the usual SUV lump with 100kg of sound deadening. No doubt it won't sound as nice as an ICE (or even close), but maybe it'd give a little bit more charm to electric power, when you car hear everything that's happening in the drivetrain?
