Dont know how many people are familiar with IRC but would it be of interest to anyone if we had a permanent WSCC channel to chat/tell tall stories and ask advice form the some of the better informed members?

I run 5 channels atm for other things and only takes me 10 mins to set one up...

IRC stand for Internet relay chat and basically acts like a chat room in real time ...So you can chat to any other WSCC members who are online..There is also a PM facility and file transfer facility built in .

I have nothing setup atm but if there is enough interest i can get it up and running.

You can download a Irc client Here and i can give full instructions on how to get into channel and set it up.

Im also offereing Photoshop work for any members who need help resizing images for Avatars (so there cars dont look squashed)  And also cleaning up images and removing stuff from pictures .

If anyone is interested in IRC please post here and if anyone needs PS work drop me a PM or email and tell me what u need done

Regards

My avatars service handles resizing automatically (it will size an image such that the longest side is 150 pixels, and maintain the original aspect ratio). The only reason people's avatars look squashed is because they enter incorrect size information into the boardroom control panel.

However it doesn't do cleaning up and cropping though (I did consider it, but never got around to actually implementing it)

IRC channel does sound like a good idea, but I'd hate for it to become an alternative to the boardroom. The good thing about the boardroom is that all the info is permanently available after the fact.

The boardroom does tend to work as a form of chatroom at many times  :D  ;)  The techy questions are a superb library of info which as Andy notes are a permanent reference for all wanting details  :D  ;)

Yes i agree the Boardroom is invaluable place for info...

The irc was more for general chat and quick tips for those that sometimes need info now rather than in a few hours or so .

If it conflicts to much with the forum its np...It was just an idea and i posted to see what interest there might be.

And yes after posting i noticed yer avatar does resize the images but some of the cropping and jpeg compression could be better...But the offer of cleaning images was more for say you took a real nice photo and then when u checked it at home there is someone behind car or a lamp post or something spoiling a nice shot etc.

Yup, some of the avatars on here could certainly do with some selective cropping :)

I'm sure you'd have plenty of people taking you up on the offer, be prepared for lots of enquiries!

I did consider a more 'manual' avatar hosting service originally (people e-mail me a picture and I re-size it, host it and provide them a URL) but decided spending a couple of weeks writing a more automated version would save more time in the long run.

Incidentally, I'm always interested in any suggestions for improvements or new features.

I still say that an IRC channel would be a good idea, as long as people didn't use it solely as an alternative to the boardroom. However, I think the temptation to just pop over to IRC and ask where to insure a Westfield would probably mean more people would do that, than make the effort to find the answer themselves.

Yup i think manual avatar editing would be a pain given the amount you host.

Only reason i mentioned the cleaning of images was that i took a load of pictures when i first got the westy and then when i got home i found i had a horrible bright yellow skip behind the car .

Really spoiled the look of the pictures ..Also on a few others i had people/dogs etc which had to be removed.

With more and more people getting digital cameras we are seeing more pictures posted and some are lovely and some are way to big/full of junk/not cropped etc

Anyway i will stop babbling and let others post  :)

Btw Mark never got that email with the pictures .

Persil, I'm sure your offer of assistance with editing images will be taken up by people. Even for me, anything beyond simple cropping or blanking out of number plates is more than I can be bothered with.

It's nice to see someone coming along and offering something back to the club. Kudos to you for that.

Are you a WSCC member Persil?

No Andy im not a member "Yet"  heheh..

I will sort it in the next few weeks but any spare cash atm is going towards paying for westy and buying the wife a new car...I will sort it in the next few weeks though.:p

Don't worry, we allow non members here too. For a while :D

As I said though, your offer of your services at least goes a long way to demonstrating you're not here just to 'take' (a pet quibble of mine ;)).

How long you had the Westfield? What you got?

I have had it for about 2 weeks..  It was stored for 16 months so alot of small niggly faults and cosmetic work to do.

Its a 1800 Sport On TB's and its a factory built car.

My dad used to rally Mini's back when i was a kid (done 3 RAC rallys) and he used to help run KLCC (Kilmarnock and Loudon Car Club) who used to run lots of Closed Road rallys/Autotests etc.

Always wanted into the Kit Car field and done the MK2 escort thing for a while but when this came up and the "right" price i could just not say no   :D

Although now my Dad wants one also so might be looking for a part finished one soon for him  .

I have asked lots of newb questions so far and not made use of the great search engine as much as i should do but im slowly getting there...Hopefully car will be mot ready in 2-3 weeks time.

As for giving something back...Well do kinda feel a little guilty ofr not joing sooner so it my small contribution to the club ..Although i have to say i have not had the "Please join here" type messages some of the other non members have

Car sounds good, certainly looks the part in the avatar.

Hope you get it on the road soon :)

Where in the country are you?
