Trip to Peak District

Hi

We are planning a weeks holiday in the Peak District from 08/06/2024 to 15/06/2024.

We are unsure where to locate ourselves and wondered if anyone from the area could suggest the best area as a base.

Also, could anyone suggest places to visit.

Having never been to the Peak District we would like to prepare an itinary first rather than plan trips out ad-hoc.

Thanks.

Mike and Jane.

Brilliant place to visit. I would recommend Great Longstone or Little Longstone. In the middle of most things - Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Heights of Abraham…. Plus the glorious countryside.

Thanks for that, we'll start looking for hotels in the area.

Bakewell is well served with eateries and is in a good position for a base. Visiting Bakewell is a must if you don't get to stay there. Matlock Bath is a must and Heights of Abraham is well worth the money. Castleton, Lady bower Reservoir, Chatsworth House/Estate, Tissington, Carsington, Tideswell and of course the car museum, The Great British Car Journey. Buxton is ok but it always rains there and it's a bit run down in comparison, Ashbourne is ok but is just a collection of shops.

Drive Winnats Pass, Castleton, the Cat and Fiddle Road, Buxton and drive to Crowdecote on your way to Tagg Lane Dairy for ice cream.

Let us know how you get on, what you liked/disliked as I am sure other people will be interested. Have a great time!

My peaky good friends @Julie Hall - WSCC AO Representative  & @AndrewBClarke have not asked the obvious, so I will. Will you be in a Westfield?

Thanks for that Julie, we should be able to create a nice itinerary from that. I'll try to keep a record of what we do and where we go.

Ian, yes we will be in the Westy. We generally just have days out which is not really using the car enough. Last year we did the Lakes and will be doing a road trip each year.

There's lots of great westie roads in the Peaks, you'll love it!

Hi. Depending on how many of you, we camped in the peaks and we hired some bikes and rode the monsal trail stoping off at all the little train stations along the route to have a drink or stopping off at the quakers cafe for cake.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi, Good topic.  We are doing France for three weeks this year, but next year fancied the Peak District, last year in Wales.  Taken on board everyone's comments.  Nothing like early planning.  So be interested in how it goes Mike.

Yes, please do let us know how you get on, I thought the other day that I need to add to drive up the A53 road from Leek to Buxton (preferably in that direction) to take in views of The Roaches, a large rock formation above you on your left.
