Well done Tom! Great fun!

Drink more beer to hold that back end down - saves you having to always have a passenger!

Cheers Chumley !!

To me it's fairly pointless comparing the dry power to weight figures.  You need to compare all up figures.  Also don't forget you need about 110 bhp just to achieve 100mph in a seven style car.  An aerodynamic modern jelly mould can achieve with just 60bhp.

Torque is less important unless the engine is not delivering power at high revs or the gearing is wrong. (see F1 stats).

Aerodynamics are massively important on any straight above about 70 mph. My previous westy had 330 bhp (weight 720 and could run a 1/4 mile in 12.4 seconds at 119 mph but took about the same again to reach 140 mph whereas a 911 turbo acceleration is almost linear to approx 150mph.

On the straight at a circuit like bedford you can easily run to 155mph. Against a Noble I would pull out 2-3 car lengths to 100, from 100 - 120 it would be level and then I was reeled in.

I think on all but the tightest of corners a standard set up Porsche, Elise, TVR will pretty much hold their own against a Westy.

Either you're wrong, or all Porsche drivers drive like girls (no offence intended to the fairer sex).

On a limited sample (2 airfield days with perhaps 3 or 4 Porsches on each) I've had no problem whatsoever outdriving a Porsche on the bendy bits.

Of course, it could be that I'm the British answer to Michael Schumacher that the world missed out on, but somehow, I doubt that.

And (FWIW) the Welsh Wizard says 'I second that'.

If anyone's brave enough to argue, you're a better man than me :D

Think I have done about 20 track days in my MegaBusa. The only Porkers I can remember being faster than me over a lap in the dry, were some race cars at Rockingham. Who were testing for a race the week after.

In the morning it was wet and they were on on full wets and they were murdering the 7 type cars. You could just see gallons of water being cleared in rooster tails.

It dried off in the afternoon and the A032R's were a little more useful. I was then able to all but keep up, I could just keep up over a lap but it was at 10/10ths and it was meant to be a fun day so I backed off and he eased away. That was a race Turbo car with about 450BHP

That is the only time I can remember being slower than a 911. I don't think I am Jenson Button  :D  So I think a well setup seven is more than a match for more powerfull cars.

Even at Spa with the long Kemel straight I was still faster than stuff with a lot of horse power. Probably down to the driver being not up to it,  but I was lapping faster than a Diablo at Spa.

I think the thing is that powerfull cars with gobs of torque can be fast but they are a lot harder to drive and a well set up 7 type car is pretty easy to drive.

My MegaBusa would destroy my old 5L TVR Chim at any track !!!!!

Cheers

I know a `Tuscan Challenge` racer who has told me that they throw away the TVR set up and apparently it is big business setting them up properly for owners straight out of the factory.

PS:Another friend has a Tuscan. When he stops for petrol he has to wait 20 mins to restart it until it cools down. A regular problem he tells me  :p

That vid I did I had been catching the Porsche for some time, when he very nicely pulled over for me (you can see the indicator as I pass)

There was a lightweight porche on the track running slicks and I couldnt get anywhere near him (I was running Toyo's) As noted I also had a slight temperature problem (ahem)

Point being, normal 911 - no problem. Well set up lightweight Porche on slicks - oh dear...

Isn't that the point though? The seven is a short step from a road legal race car - put it against road cars, no chance... Against other road leagal race cars, it's mostly down to the driver?

I was at the same trackday at Rockingham as Bazzer and had similar experiences with the race Porkers, and wiith Porkers in general.

In the morning they were frankly dangerous because they were so much quicker on a wet track and were acting like race drivers on a test day (ie overtaking wherever they wanted on either side etc). The fact that they annoyed us in the morning made it all the more satisfying when we could hold them over a balls out lap in the dry, and that was with a mere 130bhp blade car. The only real place they were pulling on me was round the banking heading towards the first chicane, the rest of the lap including all the fast twisties we were just as quick and probably slightly quicker through the slow chicanes etc.

Here's a vid of me chasing a normal roadgoing Carrera 4S round Llandow. The chap driving used to have a Fury BEC and is reasonably handy behind the wheel but on a circuit like that its no contest, especially through the slow stuff where the weight really shows (you can hear how much I have to back off through the bus stop and slow corners compared to the second vid, a clear lap).
