Speedo sensor fitting

The speedo cable sensor keeps coming off.

I've looked under the car and can see why but not how to fix it. There's a cone shaped end of a cable (with a thin metal wire that turns round inside it) that fits into the propshaft(?) but nothing to hold it in. The only thing I can see is a horseshoe(ish) ring with two small holes at each end that doesn't seem to fit anywhere. Maybe this should 'clamp' the cone shapped cable end somehow?

Anyone help or know how I make this fit in properly. Gaffer tape is too fiddly and doesn't stick. The only other thing I can thing to get is some sort of thin G clamp to hold it in but would rather fit it how it should be fitted.

Well, there's the back of the gearbox (I think) and the driveshaft (prop shaft? dunno what the real names for these bits are) comes out of it all the way to the rear diff. The cable goes into the back of what looks like the gearbox (I can't really see properly so it might not be a gearbox but it's the bit just before the shaft that goes all the way to the rear diff.

I can show anyone who's got a pic what I'm talking about. I may borrow the digicam from work and try to take some underside pics and point out what I mean.

Sound like you have a type 9 gearbox and the horseshoe ring you describe is a circlip

the circlip is spring loaded and fits into a groove in the tail section of the gearbox after thew cable has been fitted, holding it in place

you probably need a new circlip the old one may be strained this was common on sierras

hope this helps

That sounds about right. How do I fit the circlip? it looks rather fiddly, do I need any tools or just a matter of threading it through using some pliers and a screwdriver?

BTW, where would I get a replacement circlip?

Also, if I am unable to do this job, where could I get it done for me? I'm in croydon area.

thanks

The new circlip can be obtained from a ford dealer if they still stock them ? or a gearbox specialist may be able to help

the circlip is fitted with some internal circlip pliers it can be done with a small screwdriver but this can damage the circlip.

once the cable is fitted give it a good tug and wiggle to ensure it won't come out. any garage should be able to fit a new circlip for you if you can't do the job yourself but it is easy to do if you are able to get under the car

If you can't get one from Ford just take the Circlip along to your local Bearing or Fastener supplies company,

They will probably have what you want.

If you get stuck mail me the size and Type and I'll have a Root in the Garage.

There'll be One in there Somewhere...

Perksy.

PS -  Car Looks Good, I hope it Sounds as Good as it Looks

Cheers. I'll have a good go at fitting it on saturday (weather permitting :0 ). If it doesn't work then I'll take a pic and supply measurements :)

and yes, it does sound good ;):D

Fixed! Took it to Kwik-fit (yeah yeah I know but they have ramps and are open on a saturday avo)

Circlip fitted in (took some fiddling) and so far so good, works properly. If it does come out, I'll just get a new circlip as the mechanic said that's all it was.

Best bit - they didn't want to charge me! Even though all the mechanics dropped tools to come have a look ;):D Guess the manager was out :D:D
