Steve, can you point me to where I can find that info please, I have just spent an hour on the DVLA's website and that of FBHVC and can't find anything relating to Q reg in the case of tax. I recall many years ago looking into this very topic following a mate with an eligible classic car but in his case it was "substantially modified", at the time my own car ( a Q) would always need an MOT despite the 40 year ruling, but back then was unable to find out anything about tax for said Q reg. That was years ago mind, so maybe there is new info I haven't found yet.

In addition if a vehicle (including a motorcycle):
• has been issued with a registration number with a ‘Q’ prefix; or
• is a kit car assembled from components from different makes and model of
vehicle; or
• is a reconstructed classic vehicle as defined by DVLA guidance; or
• is a kit conversion, where a kit of new parts is added to an existing vehicle, or
old parts are added to a kit of a manufactured body, chassis or monocoque
bodyshell changing the general appearance of the vehicle;
it will be considered to have been substantially changed and will not be exempt
from MOT testing.
However if any of the four above types of vehicle is taxed as an “historic vehicle” and
has not been modified during the previous 30 years, it can be considered as a VHI.

If you can get a westfield as a "Vehicle of Historic Interest" the tax free rule should apply. Love to be proved wrong and see somebody pull that off.

Seems @Robin Parker (Red Spider) - Yorkshire AO is two years ahead of me here, but I will be giving it a go for sure, geez look how much we all have paid into the system so far. I based the idea from the wording on those websites, so unless I see something to the contrary I will certainly try. Are you up for it Robin ?.

LOL, I was just working out my age, and yes not entirely sure I will still be able to get in it, let alone get out again.... I'll be 70 !.

I just found this on the FBHVC website which appears to confirm what I understood that once 40 years have passed since the date of first registration on a Q plate it can still acquire historic status along with those perks in place today. They probably won't be there in a few years time as they claw back a few pounds

 

Major points of note are:

The process is one of self-declaration.

Owners will only be required to declare their vehicle to be a VHI if they wish to be exempted from an annual MOT Test.

All vehicles will still be able to be tested if their owners wish

The criteria are generic and permit changes made, less than 30 years prior to the declaration, which improve efficiency, safety, preservation or environmental performance.

Those vehicles registered on a Q plate, as kits or built up classics are not entitled to be declared as VHIs until forty years after they were registered.

For motorcycles only the criteria of Q plates, kits and built up classics prevent declaration as a VHI.

The Guidance refers to “a marque or historic vehicle experts”. A list will be published on the website of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs by 30th April 2018. Vehicle owners wishing to confirm if they may declare their vehicle as a VHI, may choose to contact the appropriate nominee from this list

FBHVC will be explaining the Guidance in full in its first Newsletter of 2018 and as soon as possible on its website at www.fbhvc.co.uk.

I did think that as time goes on they will change the rules yet again. When I first got a Classic back in the 90's the age at which it would be classed as such was 25 years which was on a rolling year on year system. Then that stopped abruptly. Then this 40 year one came in and I expect the same thing to happen again, once they work out lots of cars are now being kept, looked after and restored as the years go by. Lets see if the Gov can actually stick to their own ruling for once !.

All kit cars are PLG VED,so only two bands,engines above 1549cc and engines below 1549cc.

Audi will have supplied MPG figures so that is being charged VED off those figures. 

You can't supply MPG emissions figures for a car that you've built yourself and put through a IVA so they all get charged on the old PLG rates.
