storm cap or tonneau (or both?)

Hi, I wonder what are Your experiences, which of those (storm cap or tonneau (full for cabin and boot) are more usable?

Pros and cons of both ?

I need somethig to cover cockpit when leaving car on parking and goin away for hour or few, in case there wil be some rain, or to protect against malicious passers-by.

Managed to order custom made one (ones) for my car after making measurements.

First I thought about tonneau , but seems to me like storm cap should work  better to protect from rain? (well not sure if there is no tendency for water collecting on top in puddle (MSA rollbar, no cage), might be some additional bars needed, but it seems doable.

With storm cap -  it is probably usable witjh car on open trailer, protecting cockpit but also front window from stones etc on longer transport trip.

Tonneau looks better in car parked on some show etc area. but not sure of its protection especialy front edge above gauges , switches etc.

On friday going with car to take measurments and really now not sure what option to go for.

Price should be similar I think.

Size after folding for transport I think similar .

I have had both. I never used the tonneau and eventually sold it.

I much prefer the storm cap and use it more than I thought I would.

It has been good for protecting the car on a night if left outside but I have also found it really good if I park in town or in a carpark as I have found it stops people hanging around the car or putting children in it to take photos. [ I have caught people doing this in the past ].

I am not sure I would want to use it on a car I was towing though. I have never done it but I imaging air blowing  underneath and it eventually billowing and getting damaged. I don't know if it would but I just don't fancy the idea.

Thank You, especialy having both, You opinion is very valuable to me !

As for trailer You might be right,  might be needed some additional attachements, I thought about it as I have purpose -made  cover  for my track Westfield when traveling on trailer. But dont want so long cover on mask , affraid that wobbling etc will sand paint over time. Also its very large size after folding.

I have both and use the tonneau when I'm one up, I leave the passenger side in place and it makes the whole experience a bit warmer on cold days, and it is quick to zip up and makes the car look reasonably secure.  It is OK if left in the rain, you get a bit of puddling on the top but nothing that is a problem, although the tonneau is not as waterproof as the shower cap in heavy rain.

Although when travelling I always leave the engine in the car, rather than carrying it next to the car.!

I used to have a tonneau and like @McFrancis used to leave it covering the passenger side as it was normally just me in the car. I found that it gave good protection when closed up in the rain and a bit more security by keeping everything hidden. I have a couple of covers now which I’ve only used a couple of times; the problem in heavy rain is that it pools in the middle and just drags the cover down. So, I would likely go tonneau.

In pre Westfield days I had a car that I made my own tonneau for. I put a provision on for a removable vertical elastic strap up to the roll bar to keep the middle high and promote run off.  It looked a bit naff but it worked.

Have you looked at the Softbits For Sevens website? They have all sorts of versions. Why did you go the custom route out if interest, what car model do you have?

Yes, in fact I am waiting for a Half Hood from SBFS ;)

Wanted to order tonneau custom made not buy (from local sail and boat covers etc company here, good one) to choose good fabric I wanted,  use clips I have already installed in car. Also SBFS has as I saw only two-part tonneau (one part for boot second for cockpit, and I wanted one-part. Also custom made would be faster than from SBFS. Also its a local company, I know them they repaired my windsurfing sails few times.

But now when I decided I choose storm cap, and price of custom made and ordered in SBFS is similar, I added storm cap to my half hood order from SBFS. Sadly its 8 weeks of leading time... then custom , import  taxes, VATs  etc .

I have both, I had my tonneau made to measure to my spec and it’s great, when solo the passenger side is on all the time, thus making it easier when leaving the car to put the drivers side on.

if I’m leaving it for any length of time and rain is forecast I put the hood up then the storm cover, that stops any pooling and everything stays dry.
