jeff oakley Posted December 17, 2022 Share Posted December 17, 2022 Hi All, I am not that good with computers and I am having an issue with a site that randomly keeps popping up. You are using one site and then this one seems to hijack it and opens up a BT Survey, from a none BT site. No matter what I do I cannot stop it happening. I cannot see in google chrome how to make it a site that is blocked. It seems to suggest I need to buy and extension to allow me to do this. Glen_I Posted December 18, 2022 Share Posted December 18, 2022 I'm no PC expert, only learning as I've gone along and now working from home with very little IT support from work but I've had similar issue awhile ago with our home PC after one of the kids installed a program. A pop up kept appearing once my daughter would open a particular site (recognised educational site). After some googling for the particular pop up I found I had to physically remove the program via settings that was causing this. The PC cleaner tools wouldn't even notice it. I also deleted history and all cookies no change. What is strange is if you go on the site via Edge, no issue, it is just in Google Chrome I thought it would be easy like blocking an email address but it seems to be much harder. Goto chrome settings 》extensions in chrome... and remove or turn off any extensions you don't want. 2. Goto chrome settings and Reset.. to set chrome back to base settings. 3. Glen_I Posted December 18, 2022 Share Posted December 18, 2022 I found that the security package didn't detect any issues, and then I tried several freebies and still nothing detected. Now you mention it the random pop up was also in Google Chrome. I also deleted history and cleared cookies and cache but still no joy which is when I had to locate it and physically remove the program/software. IIRC I done a google search for the pop up which explained how to delete it but also it gave me the name of the file and its associated programs which were causing this. As has been suggested I suspect a web page has inserted a small programme that will be ignored by scanners and malware tools (I'll come back to that in a sec) so it needs to be identified and then removed. There are some simple steps to do this, but it starts with a screenshot so we can see what we're dealing with. Back to Malware, download/install and run a programme called Malwarebytes. shrops-paul Posted December 20, 2022 Share Posted December 20, 2022 I can recommend a browser plug-in called Addblocker. Ive been using it for a few years now and its free & effective. I also run a tool called CCleaner once a month which removed quite a lot of the dross that can build up. That also has a free version which is sufficient. It does sound like you have something installed that triggering it though. When the pop-up next appears you could use task manager to find out what its called and where it is installed. I always run that after un-installing a programme as it clears the registry of orphaned bits of "code" that might otherwise affect the system, especially if the same executable finds it's way back on to the machine. I only ever use CCleaner for registry clean-up. Ad blockers are OK but they can also get in the way of legitimate pop-ups, especially when internet shopping and during web site sigh ups and similar. I personally don't use ad-blockers and have never really felt the need. BUT I may well set up my browsers differently in the first place with regards to cookies, tracking and all that stuff that has been added to browsers which gives us more choice as to how our web experience behaves. Blatman Posted December 21, 2022 Share Posted December 21, 2022 Oh the irony... got one of those bl**** pop-up notifications myself yesterday. Not sure how I missed it but there we are. Both Sophos Home (my AV programme) and Malwarebytes missed it. The other way to stop these is to go to your settings (this is for Google Chrome. Firefox and Edge will have similar pages but may be named slightly differently). You can click through but it's easier to paste this in to the address bar: chrome://settings/content/notifications Scroll down until you see You'll probably see the annoying pop-up in here. Blatman Posted December 26, 2022 Share Posted December 26, 2022 CCleaner free version DEFINITELY cleans the registry. Been using it for years. However it doesn't open on the Registry cleanup page. On the left you have to select the Registry cleanup from the menu. Here's the opening page (just did a fresh download) On the left choose the Registry... The scan for issues. Once the scan is complete click Review Selected Issues. It will offer to back-up the current registry. I always save that to the desktop. Once that's done you can now fix the the issues by clicking Fix All Selected Issues Once done close CCleaner and reboot. As you can see, no subscription request was seen, and this has worked the same way for me for many years.
