My 1994 Narrow 1.6 Westfield SE!

Hi all,

I thought I would pop up some pictures of my new purchase! Its a 1994 Westfield Se with a 1.6 Xflow and 4 speed box. I purchased it from a lady who's husband built it and then toured around Europe in it so its covered 30k! (Quite how he managed that I do not know!)

Unfortunatley aside from all the original MOT's all the history is lost which is a shame. It also means im a bit lost as to the spec and build details of the car! The lady did have an active part in the car but when it comes to the mechanics she didn't know much.

The clutch was stuck when I picked it up but following some guides on the web I managed to un-stick that. It starts very well and seems to rev nicely on the spot but my first drive didn't go all that well, it seems to bog down the second you call for throttle and doesn't run well at all so any pointers there would be ace!

A few things i've noted is there is a lot of oil around the engine bay! and I mean a lot so will need to look at where that is coming from.

There is also a little box with lumenition written on it in the floor well but all the wires to this are not connected so assuming its still on points?

That aside the gauges seem to all work! the ride (from the small drive) seemed to be nice with no odd noises etc and its quite a charming little thing!

Lastly the seats need to go, they seem to be bits of wood covered in vinyl! So if anyone has any narrow seats that would be ace!

Im based in Essex so will have to try and come to a meet when its up and running!

Sorry for the essay! this looks like a great club!

  • Abers1989 changed the title to My 1994 Narrow 1.6 Westfield SE!

Welcome, we have the same year, model and engine 🥰.

THere are not many Xflows that don’t leak oil to be honest, mine does and I was really careful with the rebuild, best gaskets and the likes.

Bogging down could be a few things, timing or more likely carb related, are you used to playing with Weber’s ?. If you do want help just shout out.

If you take the dizzy cap off you will see if it’s on points, 1st upgrade from there is electronic , then if your feeling flush a mapped system.   - a whole host of these but I fitted the 123 mapped dizzy the other year and is one of the best mods I have done to be fair.

As for seats, join the back of the queue , huge lack of supply for narrow cars, still on the look out myself.

You are in the right place if you want answers to Westy questions, a huge knowledge base here.

Nice looking car, best colour too. And clamshells are timeless.

Timing needs setting, also the Weber’s might need a bit of attention. If it has been standing for a while the jets may need a clean, also the accelerator pumps are known to seize.

As Richard says, you’re in the right place if you need help or advice. And at least the engine bay won’t go rusty.

good luck.

John.

Welcome to the club, try to get along to your nearest meeting, there should be plenty of people there to answer your questions.

Your car is similar spec to mine, don't worry about the oil too much, all crossflows are like that and the seats are not that bad really.

Welcome from Bristol and Bath - great looking car and a classic look as already said.

There are plenty of SE build/rebuild diaries on the forum which you might be able to find some help with identifying the mechanicals?

Also, you could try a specialist seat provider such as https://intatrim.co.uk/classic-seats/ as they may be able to build to your requirements - and add a little luxury like heated seat pads too!

Best of luck and as others have said please ask for help when you need it.

Welcome!

Ditto what the other have said, re oil, dissy and the carbs!

I can't see what seats you have in the picture, but the factory supplied seats for many, many years were, essentially, wooden panels covered in shaped foam and then upholstered in vinyl. So there aren't that many alternatives out there on the second hand market. It has to be said though, in good condition the wooden/foam seats actually work really well and can be quite comfortable, especially in such a tiny cockpit as a narrow. However, they're often a bit tired by now - the foam layer in particular can deteriorate with age. so it may be that a bit of renovation and re-padding would suffice?

Failing that, if you want upholstered seats, someone like Intatrim  might be your best bet, alternatively some of the smaller/narrower shell type seats might fit.

I swapped inatrim odyssey (I believe) bucket seats for bench seats, and went on refurbishing them, they are WAY more confortable for me.

Even if plywood is a bit surprising, they are way better in every sense for me (I'm quite lengthy) .

They give way more room for legs, I sit lower, they offer good support in every direction, and I'm further away from steering wheel and pedals (i.e. I fit in the car)

I kept the structural foam, that didn't sag, but the vinyl backing thin foam was, well, dust, so I replaced with upholstery 5mm foam. I also added heated pads, pretty cheap modification as the seats were disassembled.

Wow, thank you for the all the kind and warm welcomes! I thought all forums had moved to facebook (my other love is a Toyota Celica GT-Four and I miss the forums dearly) forums are much nicer and easier places to be so im glad to see this one is still alive! I will get myself signed up to a membership 🙂

I haven't had a proper chance to take a look yet, I think some fresh fuel and plugs are in order and then as you have all said take a look at the carbs, dizzy etc - Unfortunatley I have very little knowledge on the twin 40's so any help as to how to set them up or clean etc would be handy.

I've had a look at some electronic ignition replacements, some like the accuspark look like a simple change inside the cap is this the way to go, others seem a bit more indepth?

Thanks for the pointers on the seats, i do echo the comments the current plywood ones aren't actually that bad  all considering.

Oh and those photos are from collection day, my garage is slightly tidier!

Cheers,

George

Don't forget that if it is an older car then it may benefit from new fuel lines to cope with E10 fuel.

Ooh, I had a couple of Celica's back in the early/mid nineties, first a fifth gen GT, then a fifth gen Carlos Saintz version of the GT4 - loved that car to bits, but had to sell to fund my first business after being made redundant in '97 - how I wish I'd been able to keep it!

It's relatively simple to rebuild the carbs, kits and available from places like Burtons. I did mine when one of the floats filled with fuel.

If it’s still on points, then yes the accuspark is a good addition, just be careful with the routing of the cables under the dizzy cap, my last one was rubbing on the main shaft and caused the car to stop at a busy junction, not good.

The 123 system is what I replaced the accuspark with, which is handy for mapping to cope with this modern fuel we get these days..

I am not at my usual location right now, but I will trawl my attachments on here and send you all the Weber info I have, as @Robin Parker (Red Spider) - Yorkshire AO says they are really simple to work on, and what you can't work out we can help you with.

Also as @Chris Broster - Bristol & Bath AO quite rightly mentions, do replace all rubber fuel lines for an ethanol compliant type,

Finally don’t think any question is stupid, there are only stupid answers, so post away we are here to help 👍

Welcome!

If you are struggling with sorting the carbs and can't find anywhere local there is a company called Carbcare in Lichfield that do a postal service. They are very reasonable on price and Alan who owns the company is a real old school, time served carburettor guru (a thoroughly nice guy too).
