Blatman
Nearly over? Well, not to be a harbinger or anything but I'm betting we still have the following to look forward to: 1. Mask wearing will be with us into 2022 because... 2. Too may people will continue to ignore sensible face-mask-wearing and social-distancing rules contributing to further spread. 3. Too many people will not take the vaccine when offered so the virus will still be in circulation in enough significance that the rules stay as they are. On top of that... 4. The governments recently anounced "idea" to extend the period between first and second doses will be shown to NOT allow full protection so some of us will be having 3 or maybe 4 jabs. Looking forward to that, obviously, along with the political fallout this will cause, and no doubt more threads where I start arguments forthright, heartfelt, passionate discussions 5. I'm betting some people will claim to have been vaccinated when they haven't in a further twist to this sorry tale. The reasons are unimportant right now but this will happen and will allow the virus to continue to be prevalent. 6. Many sporting and show events will continue to be cancelled or crowds not allowed to attend. I doubt Stoneleigh will go ahead. It'll be to soon in the year. On a previous thread I stated that if things were back-to-normal by Christmas 2021 I'd be reasonably happy. The deeper we get and the more I hear about the sheer proportion of anti-vaxxers and general virus deniers and the cavalier attitudes which come with them, I'm revising my timetable to summer 2022 (still too late for Stoneleigh...) and that's assuming that by then the virus has not mutated further to be more harmful than it already is. In fact we should hope that it mutates in to a benign state like the common cold, and that it stays that way. Then we really can move on. Nearly over? Not even close... Happy New Year
Alan France
My mother at 107 got her first vaccine yesterday. She has always been into the latest technology.
Steve (sdh2903)
I was clearly talking about the year not the C-word. I don't share your pessimism Blatters because if everyone was as pessimistic the world would be an even darker place than it is at present. My optimistic viewpoint is that the extended doses are exactly the right thing to do. Much better to give 'some' protection to more of the vulnerable rather than 'more' to a few. (Edit. Accept those working in the front line NHS, care homes and the like who should be getting the best possible cover ASAP.) By the time easter Swings round a good chunk of those vulnerable will have protection and the rest of the population will be starting to garner some natural herd immunity. I agree full normality is a way off but better times are coming. Think positive
corsechris
Agree with most of your thoughts there @Blatman, but I'm not so sure about the 4th point. I'm happy to wait and see what the results from this experiment. I suspect most countries will insist that visitors have a valid Covid vaccination, mush as some do for other ailments, so that should deal with quite a few of the more challenged folk out there - no jab, no p***-up trip to destination of choice. Blatman
Hope for the best, plan for the worst. I'm not pessimistic by nature. I want to get back to normal as quickly and safely as the next man, especially as I have a nonagenarian mother in a care home and an equally aged father at home. But I also try to be pragmatic. I want the government to do what they have said they do all along which is follow the science. The science says 2 doses 3 weeks apart for Pfizer/BioNTech and 4 weeks apart for Oxford/AstraZeneca. I do NOT believe government knows better than the vaccine developers.
