type 9 bell housing

Hi

just tried to fit my engine & box only to find that the bell housing will not go down the tunnel. the bell housing has a bulge for the starter motor which extends back to the rear edge of the housing. the first 3 to 4 inches from the rear will have to be removed in order to get the needed clearance.

can this be done safely or is there another bellhousing that already allows the necessary clearance. the bell housing is cast iron & from a 1988 2ltr pinto fitted onto a 2ltr zetec to be fitted to a SDV chassis which i beleive to be the wide tunnel chassis.

is this a normal problem or do i have an unusual housing?

yours frustrated David  :bangshead:

to get a type 9 right back into the tunnel (and to remove the need for a remote gearchange adaptor) you need to remove (=grind) the starter bulge.

It is only needed if you were to use a bendix type starter which needs that space. As you will be using a pre engaged (1988-1990 1.8 CVH Sierra normally) grind the bulge away to suit and then afix a cover to stop fingers being eaten by the flywheel -

thanks Bofus

just as i thought o well ill take the box back off the engine tomorrow & excercise the disk cutter no great problem really just something i had not anticipated. interesting about the remote gear extension as westfield said i would need it just prior to relieving me of my money.

you mention the cvh starter i have a raceline flywheel & they recon i need a small body cross flow starter the cvh is not the same by any chance is it? the small body is definately needed to pass the standard 1.8 sump. raceline will not give me the lucas or ford number.???

From memory..

X-flow starters tend to be inertia (bendix type) and therefore need the bellhousing bulge. Caterham use a pre-engaged which I think is from a Mk2 Escort with Autobox.

When I helped Ross Kenyon build his SeiW, we spent ages looking for a suitable starter...

using logic....

Zetec is very similar to a CVH block, Mk5 Escorts used both CVH and Zetec with the same gearbox/clutch..therefore 1800 zetec flywheel is same size as a CVH.

Late 1800 Sierras used the CVH with a type 9 from 1988 to 1990 and then started using the MT75 box.

The Sierra 1.8 1988 - 1990 was the only starter in the shop that fitted to the type 9 bellhousing and didn't need the sump being made paperthin, it was also a fairly grunty starter..which can't be said of the old mk2 Escort starters

god i'm wibbling far to much..where's that bottle of San Mig gone :D
