OK, major downer alert...

I always look at these Facebook "games" with a weary eye. Looks harmless enough but with my "Security" hat on (and I'm not that good at security, but I get by) I think that this is an interesting way to gather intel on people. Why last name? Why not first name? Becasue first name is no good to anyone. Surname is the gold.

Many people (as a few here do) use their real first and last names. OK but that doesn't sit well with me.

Many use their real first name but disguise or omit their last name. OK, but now I know some real first names and the first letter of their surnames, and most of you have locations under your profiles. A few minutes on any of the electoral roll search web sites could illicit usable intel should someone have nefarious intent. And it's not just about theft of vehicles...

Likewise we will see perfectly innocent questions from enthusiastic members asking what people do for a living or what other hobbies or interests they have etc etc. It's great, gives us a chance to show off a little and it is interesting. But it's also a fantastic way to give away too much info without really realising it. Some jobs have easily learnable shift patterns. Some hobbies give clues that there may be another "clubbie" website where more intel can be gathered.

And the information is here forever and is available to the entire planet (well, maybe not China). Many will say I am paranoid or taking this far too seriously and I can see why that opinion would be reached.

I'm not paranoid, but then again I don't leave my doors open at night and there's no key under the doormat either...

And I'm not saying don't play. Just think about what you give away when "chatting" on the internet. Who says you have to use your real surname? It'd be much more entertaining if we saw lots of folks who's surname started with Q or Z or X...

Well batman killed that one stone dead

Surely If surnames were a risk then surely none of the ao's or committee members should have their full names displayed?

Nor MPs names visible nor company CEOs etc.

However Blatman's point has some validity in that a lot of questionnaires are mere trawling devices to get info whether it be for marketing or more nefarious activities.

The biggest 'trawler' is of course  FizzogBook.

Afternoon All and Mark

Whilst the committee appreciate the comments made in light of the commencement of this thread, it is felt that it is down to individual members to decide if they want to play.

There are thousands of ways that our information can be obtained, electoral roll, nicking our post, scanning the posts that people put up, including their photos.

This thread is not going to be locked or removed and if people see fit, please play along.

Thanks Ian

I wasn't lodging an "official" complaint or anything.

Yes of course there are any number of ways that personal info can be gathered. For me this is yet another in a long line of things that could have a hidden agenda.

I was just seeking to raise awareness.

I absolutely do not want this thread locked or removed. I'm getting lots of good info about you guys :o
