Brad Stone
Currently looking into breakdown cover options for a Europe trip in May. Ideally need to be able to load the car onto the back of a truck and it be covered for transport all the way back to the UK (If necessary - Of course the cars are being prepared to the most exacting standards prior to the trip. ) Have looked into FootmanJames and RAC's policies - Any recommendations? Duration is 12 days - I expect this to be around £150 per car but would be interesting to see what has been paid for a similar single trip policy also. Thanks B
Geoffrey Carter (Buttercup)
Depending on the age of your car then Autoaid's sister company do a policy which is supposed to be very good. Buttercup was too old so I used the RAC which was available through my bank. I could unsubscribe after 6 months so I only paid £60.
CrisisWolf
Adrian Flux was £80 odd for the year
Ian Kinder (Bagpuss) - Joint Peak District AO
Hi Brad, I pay circa £45 to A-Plan for 12 months cover inc euro cover but no idea how they would get me back etc. Don’t want to find out either 😱 I doubt any will offer the same truck all the way back etc They usually play ‘pass the parcel’. @Jude - The Mad Widow ‘s car came back last summer from a Euro trip. So she’ll be able to advise who she was with etc and her experience. You’re best aiming to carry sufficient tools/parts across both cars and fix it yourself. We can discuss when we have our coffee break catch up soon.
Brad Stone
Thanks all for the responses. @Geoffrey Carter (Buttercup) - Do you know the name of the company? Can this be done through Autoaid? @Ian Kinder (Bagpuss) - Joint Peak District AO We have been doing some digging on current policies, and they basically state that they would get you to a local garage. I will be aiming to carry sufficient spares up to a certain degree (electrical / cables / fuel pump / certain engine ancillaries etc) but if the engine pops a rod out of bed, I want the piece of mind that I can jump in a rental car / on a flight and meet the car back in the UK - Lets discuss in the week! I shall await Jude's response, I did read about that unfortunate occurrence in the Westfield Magazine! Brads
Jude - The Mad Widow
I blew a head gasket in Central France. I had RAC breakdown giving up to around 30 days in Europe. With one call my car was collected by a local garage within the hour. It was taken to a ferry and picked up and bought home on a UK truck. In about a week.. It was taped up and as I left it but dirty. Because its a specialist vehicle no attempt was made to repair it in France. I was impressed by the action taken regarding my car. However they did sod all for me but that's another story!

I have the driver - based policy relating to any car I'm driving, however having read up I may need to look into taking out an additional policy. Thanks Brad
GuitarmanUK
I looked at the AA European policy, but it specifically excluded kit cars so I ended up buying the A-Plan breakdown policy for £44.95.

Yes I added breakdown cover to my insurance with Advance. It was £55 and was for the RAC. I have some claims so probably more expensive for me! I had AA Euro breakdown cover a year or two back. Not particularly recommended though, as far as I know, (didn’t need to use it), the coverage is fine, but it ended up working out hellishly expensive. Double what A Plan etc normally charge. I've looked at little closer at my breakdown cover and started to worry, that I'd not been adequately covered during my last 3 Euro trips and have just spoken with Carlie ( @A-Plan Insurance THATCHAM) for clarification. Whilst the docs state: I'd prefer the nearest 'suitable' garage to be my own! I'm delighted to report, Carlie advised otherwise (I'd been 'boy looking' to quote my wife!)! The deeper T's and C's state: Hence Carlie wouldn't take any more money from me to improve my Euro Cover as it's already perfect! 3
