Thrustyjust Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 I have a book on road tests of variuos westies and have the info on the weasel.It says they aimed to increase the bhp from a standard 75bhp to 120 bhp at the same rpm.Mods included a change in combustion chamber shape to improve swirl ,a bigger garrett turbo than the original T2,a cossie intercooler and increasing the boost from 12psi up to 20psi and mods to the fueling for top end.The car was originally meant to fit in place of a x-flow,but when Chris Smith heard about it,apparently 'gave' them a V8 chassis for it to fit. 0-60 time was 6.6 secs and 30-70 was 6.3.Top speed was a dizzy 108 mph at a frantic 4800rpm!!!!The top gear frm 50mph to 70mph was quicker than the Aston Virage,M3 evolution and was just beaten by the 850i beemer. There's a V8 engined Westy which was built as a drag racing car and was (still is for all I know) owned by James Lambert. That car had an automagic box and it caused much amusement at the Emerald rolling road day when it kept trying to climb out of the rollers and escape !! The crowd of se7eners who had previously been clamouring around in front of it parted like the Red Sea !! Quote

windy Posted December 23, 2003 Posted December 23, 2003 Yep, I've been thinking the same about the benefits of diesels. Don't forget these engines have come a long way since the Wiesel was conceived. Unfortunately emission legislation is strangling the way petrols run (poor throttle response, big heavy flywheels etc) but don't seem to effect diesels as much so are becoming "better" engines in my opinion. Noise & smell are becoming less of an issue with diesels & the economy & torque characteristics are exceeding those of petrols. Quote

I have a 130 hp Passat TDI as my other car and I have to say that the power for acceleration is better (IMHO) than my 150hp SRI or my 2litre XR4x4. It is remarkably easy to get into trouble with too much power on pulling away from light or turning corners starting to spin wheels. (By the way I'm an old fart who doesn't drive as fast as some of you heroes). By comparison, SWMBO is looking for a new car and we tried the MR2 and the 1.8 MX5. To quote her after the drives "I'm disappointed in both of them, neither are as fast as the Passat" I drove them both and was surprised at how tame they were, I had to work very hard winding the engines up in low gears to get any power and I never got the "surprise" acceleration the Passat has. There was no punch at all, just a very windy elastic band. I would certainly say that if only the Passat engine would fit, it looks a little tall, it would be a surprisingly fast Westfield especially 40 - 70 acceleration. Diesels have certainly come a long way and all for the better. David Quote
OB1 Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 Must say I agree about diesels - my day car is a Renault Laguna 2.2 DCI - 16v turbo diesel chucking out 150bhp and 320Nm of torque (what's that in foot / pounds I've no idea - but it pulls like a Saturn V) - grunt from 1000 to 5000 rpm. Great for cruising and towing, but never have the sound, smell and spit of a tuned 16v XE. Mind you, they also do a 3ltr V6, and VW do a 5ltr V10 that would pull a Westfield chassis in half..... Stuart Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 The new beemer 3 series 2 litre diesel has 150bhp and 330Nm of torque. The new 2 litre petrol has 143bhp and 200Nm. It's a fairly recent phenomena that stock diesel engines are more powerful than petrol engines of the same capacity, and doesn't that tell a story? Anyone who still thinks diesels are crap should have a go in a 320D. Quote
